The pony motor was really a very good concept. It was used to start the main diesel engine. They turned over at a high speed. I worked on one on a 70 once that would start the large engine even though it turned out to be running on only 2 of the 4 cylinders. You should probably get an owners manuel as there is a right and wrong way to start the big engine with the pony. Also most people shut off the fuel to the pony and run it out after the large engine is started otherwise they had a tendency to leak fuel into the engine. Kind of funny that JD and Cat both used the starting engines a lot on early tractors and the close relationship to the 2 brands at that time. The pony was expecially good in cold weather as it was much easier to start than the diesel and you could roll the diesel over for a bit prior to starting and get it warmed up some.
