What is the difference between a 4440 and a 4640? Is there any external diff. other than the sticker's? I believe a 4440 has a Bosch A-pump and a 4840 has a P-pump, whitch does a 4640 have? I am looking for a tractor to farm and tractor pull with and was wondering what would work best? Would a 4640 or even a 4840 be light enouph to get in a 13000 farm stock class? I know a 6030 would be the best but that would be to easy. Thanks for any info.

You all pretty much covered the differences between the 44 , 46 and 4840 . As far as pulling goes the 46 stripped of all weights and brackets , smaller tires on front , 10 gals fuel and a light driver could make 14,500 on most scales . It pulled much better in 16 to 18,000 classes though . Mine was a quad range . I used to open the pump one thread from all the way in , run it at 29-3000 rpm , B-2 and it was hard to beat in a 16-18 class . Don't know what hp it had but ran it 200-210 for farming .
I sold it to a neghbor a couple years ago and bought another neighbors '82 4840 at his auction , I wanted a powershift because it was handier I think . My 46 was an '81 . The 15sp wauld be better I know but I get along pretty good with the 8sp . With the quad I used B2 and C2 most of the time and 4th and 5th are almost the same speed . I also have three other 8sp Powershifts .
The 48 will strip down to about 15,100 , but it like the 46 pulls way better at 16-18 . When you strip those big tractors all the weight comes off the rear and that's where you really need it for those long tractors . As far as I'm concerned the 44 , 46 and 4840 series were the best tractors Deere ar anyone else ever built .

Im with you JDJIM. My father and I have said for 20 years that the 4440 would make everyone forget about how great the 4020 was/is...and he started farming with 2 4020s (one of which he still uses everyday) back in the 60s! I have logged about 5,000 hours in the seat of my fathers 79 4440 pulling everything from a NH 489 haybine to chisels and disks to 12-row (30) planters and cultivators. In my opinion, the availability of the 540 pto is the key to this tractors versatility. In short, it is the perfect size for almost any farm task. The 4440 is Hall-Of-Fame material even more so than the 4020.

There is a picture of me baling wheat straw with our 4440 along with some pictures of some of our other equipment at: farmphoto.com.

Here are a few more things to add, the 4640 had a Bosch "A" pump on it, it had 10mm plungers, compared to 9.5 mm on the 4440. I pull a 4440 and have never seen a 4640 in the 13,000 lb class. We have one we pull w/ duals nd wght on in the 18500, I have seen them in the 15,500. I MIGHT have seen one just barly make it in the 13,500 class but I can't say for sure, seemed to me it was stripped of everything. How big of equipment do you plan to pull with it? A 4440 will handle up to about a 28' disk, 12r planter, cultivator, with a touch of the mighty 10mm socket of course, for those of you that know what i mean. That's here in western Iowa. It's pretty common to see 4440's run 180 ball park hp.

the 4640 is a "large frame" tractor, the 4440 is a "small frame". the 4640 has 1000 rpm pto, the 4440 is interchangeable 540/1000. you can usually get a 4640 (around n. iowa) for slightly more than a 44, because the 44's sre more popular and a bit handier around the yard. i have a 4450, and wish i had bought a 4650, instead. the little amount of money difference would have been well worth the added hp. sit in the cab of 4440, 4640, 4840, look down the hood, and you'll see the difference. i definately do not like the 8 speed powershift of the 30 & 40 series- too rough and not enough gear selections. my opinion.

Have you ever seen the two tractors? The 4640
is obiviously bigger in every way over a 4440.

according to my book, they all take the same basic type pump, just set up for different fuel requirements.the 4440 is a 130 hp unit with a smaller rear end than the 155 hp 4640.the 4640 and the 180 hp 4840 are basically the same tractor.4640 weighs 14350 while the 4840 comes at 14900.the 4440 weighs,10900

The 4640 is intercooled, the 4440 is not. The 4640 is a large-frame tractor, the 4440 is not. Frame refers to the clutch housing on back, not the width between the frame rails. 4640 has a larger hyd pump, rockshaft, etc. The list of small differences goes on and on. Both were available either as quad-range tractors or powershifts. 4840 tractors are only available as powershifts. Fuel tank is also larger on a 4640 than a 4440. Powershift 4640s will use a larger clutch pack, brake pack, differential, final drives, axles etc.
The load shaft (3 pt. hitch) will also be larger. Basically, the 4640 is a completely different animal all around. 4640 and 4840 are much closer to being the same tractor than 4440 and 4640. I hope this helped you some.
