My 420 electrical system has been working like a champ. I totally rewired the tractor including a new regulator and switch and ampmeter. That was about a year ago - everything worked great. I had it in a welding shop to have a wide attachment made for the bucket. When I picked it up I noticed that it did not charge, can't swear that it charged when I dropped it off though. Now I got nuttin. The meter shows discharge when I turn the lights on, but sets on zero with the motor running and the lights off. My big green manual says to refer to the 40 manual :( Clooney has posted the trouble shooting procedures many times on rummies, but that board won't charge either right now. Hopefully, clooney or someone else has saved the procedure and can cut and paste it here. It would be appreciated. Thanx.

Henry, the 420 is a little harder to check because the regulator is remotely located.....
~The first thing to try is, polarizing the generator. Run a jumper wire from the big battery nut on the starter to the (A) post (bigger of the two) of the generator, after a spark it is polarized. If no spark you have a malfunctioning generator or open in the field control circuit. ~With the tractor running at fast idle take a jumper wire & ground the (F) post (smaller of the two) on the generator to a clean engine ground (if it charges you have a bad regulator ground, open in the field wire between the regulator & generator or bad regulator).
~If no help there you will have to access the regulator, then leave the ground wire on the (F) terminal of the generator & jump the (BAT) terminal to the (GEN) terminal on the regulator, if it charges then you have a bad regulator. ~If still no charge, with the engine off make sure you have battery voltage to the (BAT) terminal of the regulator (if not find out why) then with the (BAT) terminal jumped to the (GEN) terminal on the regulator see if you have battery voltage or close to it at the (A) post on the generator, if not check for an open in the wire from the (GEN) terminal of the regulator to the (A) post of the generator. ~If all the above checks out you probably have a bad generator, stuck brushes, dirty commutator or the possibility of a defective ammeter.
