Alright, I got the newer serial number bearings in. The O.D. is too small. Here are the specs that I have.
New cup - JD7448 - OD 5.250" - 1.030" Thick - Bower #47620
Old cup - JD7434 - OD 5.500" - 1.127" Thick -
Timken #47621

The new cones I ordered were correct, right down to the Timken part number. I went back to the parts book and looked again for anything else that might have changed. I still don't see what it could be. The similarity in the Timken and Bower part numbers is interesting. If I could get a Bower #47621, would that be correct? The guy at the bearing outfit said only Timken and SKS still make this bearing, but maybe he just wanted to sell me $1200 worth of bearings. I'm sure somebody in the distant or recent past has run into this dilemma. The idea we're kicking around now is to have sleeves machined to take up the .250" difference in the O.D. We fitted one of the new styled cups to one of the new cones and it seems to fit very well, the rollers cover the entire surface of the cup, unlike the original cups. I'm wondering if these new cups were just boxed wrong - I'm going to get on JD Point and check the specs of the new cups, they could be wrong. Does anyone have a #48400 and up rear end housing laying around to measure the I.D. of the axle tube where the bearing fits? I can't believe they would have changed to a smaller cup, especially since I can't see a difference in the parts book. Anyway, I'm rambling on here, so if anyone has a bearing book (I know you do Clooney), or any other info source, I would sure appreciate the help. Thanks in advance, G-MAN.

This is a little off the subject, but I was replacing the main wheel bearings on my Big 12 grain cart one time.

The main wheel bearings are roughly 6 inches in diameter on the cart.

The old bearing cup plainly had a timken number still printed on it...

I ordered replacements and got them out to the farm and when I went to install them, the new cup was about 1/8 of an inch too small... Yet the # was identical to the old one...

My parts guy reordered again and same thing again - we never did figure out where the difference was coming from and I had to just reuse the old one...

G-MAN, I looked your bearing cups up in my charts & can't seem to cross it to anything with a reasonable price. I do show the Timken #47621 cup as being 5.5115 in O.D. rather than 5.5 but that could be a misprint or your cup O.D. is worn from spinning.
~I did find a cup that is questionable to work, it is a SKF 476210-200B & lists for 109.73 but my price list is getting kind of dated.
~I made a few calls to some bearing supply houses that I have dealt with in the past on some of the "hard to find" bearings that I seem to get involved with from time to time. I am waiting for return calls (neither place had stock on the Timken #47621 bearing cups) as they were going to try to match a cup that will work, or locate a reasonable source. I probably won't hear back until tomorrow sometime (I will let you know what I find out).
~Your idea to machine spacer rings would probably work ok & depending the cost of machining might be a cheaper way to go.
~You might try calling Greg Stephens at 303-688-3151, or email at [email protected] , In the past he has been very helpful in furnishing "hard to find" bearings for some of my projects & in some cases has been able to supply original bearings much cheaper than the bearing houses or other sources.

Thank you very much for the effort, Clooney. We ordered a bearing for an unstyled G today - up to around 10,000 serial number. It should have the right O.D. I heated my old bearings with a torch to shrink them and remove them easier. That's why they measure smaller. That and I just measured them with a digital caliper, not a mic. They haven't been spinning, though. I have another source for the right bearings, I think. But I'll see how this other one looks tomorrow. It's just a little thinner, but hopefully it will work. Once again, I really appreciate the effort, and if I can help you with something some time, don't hesitate to ask.

Got the early unstyled cup in today, it won't work either. The OD is right, but it isn't thick enough and the cones go through too far. I never would have imagined that it would be so difficult to find a reasonably priced bearing for this thing. Makes me glad I don't work on rare tractors - I'd be nuts by now. As far as that goes, I'm starting to wish I would have left this one in the weeds. I've got one more source to try, so if anyone else has anymore ideas, I'm open to them. To me, it looks like having sleeves made is the answer, but I don't know. Thanks in advance for any help.
