An old plow was discovered on a piece of property that our Parks Dept. purchased. It has one disc and plow (?), one large wheel on the left side attached to a drive mechanism and a smaller wheel on the right side. In raised letters on the frame is "JOHN DEERE 583". Can anyone shed light on this piece of equipment?

Can you post a picture? Bob Collins below and some of the other guys on this net are super at identifying these plows. I have a 4B that Bob nailed.

jonathan, That is likely a #4B (or one of the #4 series)plows made by John Deere from 1935- 1949. If there is only one bottom and coulter, one bottom is missing, because that is a 2 bottom plow. Since the steel land wheel is larger than the furrow wheel it was likely built before 1942. This is a popular plow and there are lots of them around if you would like to fix it up for use or decoration. Bob
