I have a 1956 420W that leaks out of both rockshaft seals. Is it possible to replace the seals without removing the shaft? If so, do I need anything special? I'm looking for the fastest way to accomplish this so I don't have my tractor out of service very long. Thanks...

I read a post on Rummy's a long time ago from a person who changed the seals without taking the rock shaft out. As I recall, he did not expound on how he extracted the ole seals, but one can envision caoxing the new ones in with light tapping all around or coming up with a sleeve that will fit over the shaft. Personally, I am letting mine leak until I have a chance to give the tractor a break (next fall) and pull the rock shaft. It looks like to me that the big deal will be if one can get the lifting arms off the shaft. According to my books your housing may have bushings in it. I want to see if and how much of the play is from worn bushings first. Anyway, I have read where it can be done with success. Good Luck. And after all, it the new seals dont hold you have already feed up the arms and the follow on should be academic and you have not lost a lot of money.
