Hi guys. I have a question on my G. It is serial #30722, which calls for axle bearing cone JD8112R
and cup JD7434R. I can get the cones no problem. However, I called a bearing supply place here in town, and was told that the new Timken cups would be $300 a piece. Needless to say, I am not spending $1200 for 4 bearing cups. I got to checking some more in the parts book, and found that cup JD7448R is used on serial #48400 and above, with no change in the cone number. Is there any reason I can't use the newer cups, which are readily available for $15? I see no difference in the axle or the axle housing in the parts book. I was just curious if anyone else had encountered this. The new style cups are not quite as wide, but the wear on my old cups indicated that the rollers didn't even cover the entire bearing surface. I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Gman, just another example of Deere sticking it to us. The rear axle seals for a 40 are $25 at Deere and $7 at Motion Industries. Do you have a Motion Ind. near you? If not e-mail me the Timken numbers of everything you need and I will check with my M.I. dealer. So far they have been able to crossreference every seal and bearing and cup that is in a 40 thru 430 Deere. Also my M.I. dealer will measure the old seals and bearings and match them up for me.

Hey, if you email me I will call around too. Just send me the bearing numbers. Can't hurt to get as many people a try.

G-MAN, I don't know if you can do what you want or not, maybe?
~E-Mail me the bearing numbers from the cone & cup on your old bearings & I will see if I can find them in my bearing charts. Maybe I can find something else, or at least see what the difference is. Send me the new Timken numbers also.

Thanks for the offer to help guys. I'll get the numbers e-mailed to you and posted on here tomorrow. I really can't see any reason why the newer bearings won't work, as nothing else (including the cones) changed at that serial number. I was told by the bearing guy downtown that there are only 11 of these bearings in the Timken system, he figures that they only produce them when there is a demand, hence the outrageous price. According to him, only Timken and SKS still makes this bearing. I'm going to go ahead and order the newer bearings as it won't cost me anything to do it and they can be returned if they don't fit. I'm going to fit the new cup on the cone and check it out. If I have to have the new cups machined or have shims made to put behind them, I will. I am not going to pay twice what I paid for the whole tractor for 4 bearings.

I went back to the parts book and checked it yet again, the only difference we can find is that the washer is not used next to the inner oil seal anymore on ser# 48400 and up.
