What is your prefered look, style of John Deere tractor? Here are some catagories.

1. Pre Waterloo Boy, to include the Frolich, Dain

2. Waterloo Boy's

3. The D era, including the GP

4. Unstyled Row Crops

5. Styled 1939-1947

6. Late Styled 1947-1953

7. First Number Series, all green.

8. 20 series

9. 30 series

10. New Generation

My faviorite is the Late styled, with the New Generation coming in a close second.

My favorite is any JD that hasn't been butchered up into a pulling tractor!

1. 20 and 30 series; I can't make up my mind {rowcrop}
2. New generation tractors{because I still want to farm, and have spent alot of time with them.}
3. Late Styled with A for sentimental reasons, and the D because they are so interesting.
4. However; If I could have just one tractor to have as a hobbie, it would be either a 720 or 730 rowcrop gas. I currently have an early 4020, but someday for a working tractor I hope, I will own a late model 4020D with side console hydrolics 2 remotes, sycro transmission, wide front, along with an extra rollamatic front, Rops and canopy. To me Gentleman that tractor is what Dreams are made of. Have a good day, Greg H.

Personal taste is rather subjective at best. Waterloo diesels in standard chassis, husky & strong looking. Narrow rowcrop diesels look like football players in ballet tights.Any wide adjustable rowcrop Wqaaterloo looks like the front axle was put under as an after thought & may break off.Gas Waterloo's with rollomatic fronts with rear tires set to the end of the axles look fine and won't easily tip over. Dubuques with the utility or standard chassis is all we ever see up here. The "W" rowcrop utility while the most popular built, isn't seen unless it's a 435. The "W" chassis looks a little funny always driving up-hill unless there are 34" rims on the back & 15-5:00's on the front.

G !

You're breakin my heart !

Besides, it was a whole lot easier to put a #227 picker on my RC than your Std !

You know what STD stands for....? H-m-m-m-m-m?

True the narrow rowcrop had their place at one time. STD isn't a concern here as getting caught & shot would be fatal first. If the last acquisition is restorable "mine is bigger than yours" will apply. How is the 70D coming along?

Well,

I'd say she's gettin' close.

Pistons/rods are in.

Manifolds are on.

Have to get the fan and P/S pump primed and painted, then onto the press to install the new fan shaft clutch components. Pump is together with new seals/bearing.

Currently cleaning the outside of the radiator, then prime and paint that. It was leak-free and solid. It got a new core probably the season before it got parked.

End of the weekend...it will be getting very close. If by then it will hold coolant, I might give the newly rebuilt pony a chance to pop a few times. Just to be sure.

I want to go slow, but it's getting close enough that I see the home stretch.

Remember when you gave me those cam lift dimensions, and we both couldn't relate them to the actual lobe heights ? Well, G, the rocker arms are different lengths for the intakes vs. the exhaust, so, I'll bet those dim's are right if you mearsure the lift at the valve ! Those valve guide are not in a straight line; the tops are, but since the valve head is larger on the intakes, they stagger the guides.

I did have to adjust the decompresion linkage to get my .055-.080 hold open. I'm not sure it was ever right.

Forgot, though, I still need the pumps/injectors/fuel transfer gone through. I have to send those out this week. By waiting on those, I can keep myself from starting it until I'm sure I'm done !

Glad I have a decompression lever. It'd be hard to roll her over too many times with a ratch without !

this order:
20 series
first number series
late styled
30 series(diesel, then gas)
styled
for me, the rest don't count- not even my own 4450, although it is more comfortable.

My favorite styling is...

NO STYLING!

Unstyled D era is #1.
Unstyled rowcrops is #2

The first numbered, all green isn't bad either. Maybe that is because I just got one.

Don't forget the two cylinder 440s (and industrial New Generation). They almost look unstyled too, with a flat grille.

I like the late styled best, then the early styled, followed by the first numbered series, then the 20 series, then the unstyled letter models. I know they're real good tractors, but I just never cared for the 30 series styling, didn't like the new generation styling either.

Mine is the 30 series... If Deere wanted to get into the "retro" look that's hitting Detroit now, they should try the look of the 30's. They had a great look with the broad flash of yellow against the green hood. Nice proportions and angles.

Personal favorite is the 730 Diesel. Dad had one with wide front and 16.9 - 38 tires. Looked good and pulled even better!

My two cents...

I have to say that I don't really care for any of the Dubuque tractors, I just think that only Waterloo tractors are "real" two-cylinders. I know I'll probably catch some heat for that, but I'm not ripping anybody's choice of tractor. I've said before, that's what's great about our hobby, we can all do as we please. My all time favorite is the styled G (obviously). The twin stacks and radiator overhanging the frame rails just do it for me, along with the short hood arrangement. I really want a GM (love the pan seat), but that will have to wait until my bank account recovers from my '48, lol. Anyway, all Deeres are great, so do whatever you want with whatever tractor you want.

3. 20 Series 720, 820, 620

I'd have to agree with that...late styled then 20 series, but I liked the first numbered series alot.

Nothing beats to three photos I have in my office of our 70D when it was newer, and our 4020D the day it was delivered.

The third one is our our first JD, a 1948 "A". It hopped a lot of clods and picked a mess of corn.

Early styled, 6 spd, hand crank, row crop "A". I've wanted one since my first experience seeing one in the summer of 1962 (it was like a scene right out of a John Ford movie). I've been seriously collecting parts for that tractor for the last 11 years. My second choice is the "50" with narrow front rollamatic. It compliments the long (exagerated on the 50) hood. I also like the hood emblem of the early numbered series, simple not gaudy, refined, a step above the rest, the words JOHN DEERE in chrome, underlined with a thin green line.

The hood emblem on my 50 ('53) still had its original paint when I undertook the restoration. Originally, the emblems were painted totally green and then the surface of the letters and raised line were rolled over with yellow paint. I verified this by sanding through the faded yellow paint on the letters and took a picture to prove it. I restored my emblem the same way it came from the factory -- green everything, then rolled-on yellow letters and line. There was no polished/shiny metal anything on these early tractors except the "power steering" ring on the steering wheel.

Not sure i understand your discription. Are you talking about the chrome emblem, top front of the tractor? I've got three of the chrome plated potmetal emblems (JOHN DEERE)One off a 50 that has been painted over with green paint, (poor paint job) but no traces of yellow, and two off of 60s that are in good shape that only have green (no yellow anywhere) between the letters and the bottom line and below the bottom line. on the back of the emblem the surface is frosted and would hold paint better than the front, but no paint anywhere on the back. Somewhere like "two cylinder magazine" there is an explination for what you are talking about. If you already know of a technical refrence in an archive let me (and others) know-----Always willing to learn!
