50 main bearings HELP

I have purchased Main bearings(bushings) for my model 50 and have removed the old bearings from the housings. The new standard bearings however will not fit over the crank:
1. Do these have to be honed to correct size after installation in the housings?
2. Are these a press fit into the housings?
I have not tried using the press to reinstall the new bearings as they are a 100 bucks a piece and I do not want to damage them, but I did have to press the old ones out.

my advise would be to have the machine shop install the bearings and take your crank and have them machine hone to match the crank allowing the specified oil clearance. If I were doing at home on a shade tree basis I would heat the main in an oven, freeze the bearing then install them. You should get enough expansion and shrinkage to allow the fit, however you may still need a tool to tap or drive them in. I would then use a new brake hone to set the clearance. The first senero is probably your best deal though.

A machine shop needs to put those bearings in for you. The crank needs to be turned and the bearings line bored to fit. Its not just a press them in and good to go deal.

The crank mics OK it is the correct size within the limits and it is not out of round! So why turn the Crank? In my parts book it says "to be sized after installing in housing" but it gives no reference on how to size them. I can't have them line bored because there is no way to get the Engine Block into the boring machine according to the local machine shop. Because the engine block and the transmission case is all in one piece. They said the housings would need to be on the block in order for them to be line bored.

Farmuse, they don't really line bore them, on all the ones I have done, I just press the bearing in the housing then set the main bearing up on the mill using the flat part that mates up with the block to set the attitude of the housing then center the boring head in the center of the pressed in bearing & bore to the correct size including bearing clearance.
~In the old days when the bearing & housing assy. was able to be purchased from Deere it came in the correct size & it wasn't line bored. Line boring is important when boring more than two bearings but doesn't mean too much when only 2 bearings are used.

Makes sense to me now Thanks for the explaination. Will be taking it to the machine shop to let them polish the crank and fit the bearings into the housing and to the crank.

It is a retaining pin that you will find in the housing. Its purpose according to a mechanic I talked to is for alignment, if the bearing ever turned it would misalign the oil gally hole in relation to the bearing and therefore stop the flow of oil to the Crank and rod bearing on that side. He used a 5/16 pin punch and drove the pin out. said it could be reused as it was a pressed fit pin. Just to be careful when replacing so it would not harm crank.
