Hi. I am restoring a '48 model A. The machine shop doing the engine work says not to run the tractor at a full load. They claim that if you run it against the governor, that it would fly apart. I have never driven this tractor before so I don't really know what to think. Can anyone with some experience give me some advice? Thanks John

John:

My dad fed 7 kids running his '48 "A" at rated speed. And that was with aluminum pistons !

I guess I'd be a bit leary of a shop who's work included that kind of caveat.

I mean, what's the point of having them do work that can't stand full throttle ?

Like everyone else has said, running an engine with a load on it at rated speed is just fine. But just like racing an unloaded car engine in the parking lot, don't rev it up unless it's working. I think GTaylor said what the high end is...I've forgotten after all those years, 975 ?. I know I was so happy when we got the 70 and it had a tach and ground speed indicator.

What's the serial number ? Ours was 595751.

Frank, the serial number for my A is 595,338. My great grandad bought it new. It came as an AW with 42"rears. They also bought the AN single front setup so they could cultivate corn and milo. I hope to have it all restored by this summer. What type of front end did yours come with? What crops did your family grow?

Hey John!

Way back in the 50's, we grew hay and grains, had hogs, and a small dairy operation...160 acres. As time went by, we moved to grain only, corn and beans.

#595751 came to us as a roll-a-matic (so narrow front end), gas, later converted to aluminum pistons for more power. Used a #226 picker on it, and pulled most times 3-14's.

She was a good one !

The "A" was desighed to run at it's rated rpm of 975 and at 80% of it's max rated 38 pulley HP.

I have a 48 A that I rebuilt the engine on. I use it under load at full throttle all the time. It is made to run that way. You do need to be certain the governer is set up to not let the engine overspeed (RPM wise)I ran the engine in at idle for a short time when rebuilt and then alternated between full load and idle which allows the rings to seat correctly. We have run it full load, full throttle on the belt too for hours at a time.

Two cylinder Deere's were made to run at rated rpm. So running it wide open at the correct rpm won't hurt a thing. As long as the motor is sound. Don't run it at full load until the motor is broke in, yes. But my B I have has had a belt on it for a couple of hours at wide open.

My 2 cents
