Identifying JD M vs. MT

My father recently bought at auction a running John Deere MT; at least we think. The letters on the lower side of the grill say "MT", but the serial number begins only with an "M". Also, from the limited research I've done on-line this afternoon, it looks like his serial number (M-41694) would put it beyond the number of MTs produced (plus all the photos I can find of MTs have single/narrow front wheels, whereas his has wide-set front wheels with hubcaps, which more resembles the Ms I've found photos of).

Can anyone confirm for me (or direct me to a source of this info) based on the serial number, whether this is indeed an M or MT? Are the grills/hoods interchangeable by chance, and could someone have salvaged an MT hood and put it on an M?

Any assistance would be appreciated! (His birthday is a week away, and I want to get him a manual or other related materials - but I need to know what he's got first!)

Greg.My info shows you have a 1950 M,not MT.The plate,if correct,should show this.
Will try to explain an easy way to tell the difference between an M and MT.
I hesitate to use the word 'always',but think it is correct here, someone will correct me if an exception exists that I don't know about.
An M or MI will always be a wide front and will have a dropped final drive.
An MT will always have a straight rear axle,no dropped final drive.
An MT could be ordered with a dual, narrow front end,'Tricycle'.
A wide,adjustable front.'Wide'
The third offering was a single front wheel'Narrow.'
The confusing thing about the MT was,the front ends were interchangleable, what came from the factory may not be what is on the tractor now,not really important, except for the MTN,or Narrow.MT Narrows had a longer rear axle, mine measures 18 1\4 inches beyond the housing.
If you find a narrow front with burnt off rear axles,it usually indicates the farmer tore down one too many sheds or gate posts and simply torched the dang things off.

Remember,straight rear axle,"MT'

Dropped final drive'M'or 'MI'

Rim size is one way to identify the difference. Sheet metal is another, especially the nose cone. The MT nose cone will have a hole in the front center for mounting implements. Many people confuse the T in MT to mean tricycle front, but it stands for two row. I have had both style tractors, M and MT. The last MT I sold was a narrow front end with two row cultivators. I currently own two Ms, one with an adjustable wide front end and one with a fixed width front end. The manuals you seek are PC848 for parts, and SM2001, the service manual. Sometimes you can find them on ebay auctions. You can also buy them from the John Deere Distribution Center. Their 800 number is in the archives on this site.

I could be wrong, but I think MT had the adjustable rear wheels that slid on the axle, where the M you moved the rim.

The biggest difference is the rear tires, Standard size for the MT was 10x34, and I believe the M has 10x24. Your s/n also consides with the M series. The grill would be interchangeable, and was probably taken off an MT. If is doesn't have the 34 inch tires then it is not a MT.
