My 48 D has recently started running bad. Lots of backfiring when running at higher speeds. Seems to idle pretty smooth, but when I load it or run it at a higher speed, it backfires alot. I rebuilt the carb this winter because I knew it needed it anyhow. Pulled the plugs (Champion W18). The left side looks OK in that the electrode is tan colored like it has been firing. The right side is black on the end of the electrode. There is spark to the top of each plug. What are the best spark plugs to run in a D? Thanks

This is just a shot in the dark but worth a try.
If your D has a 3way valve make sure it is turned all the way open for the main tank. The slop or wear in the linkage may prevent this from turning all the way and starve the carb.

I had this happen on my D where it would pull good on the small tank but start missing when I would switch. Once I figured it out it never missed a beat. Good luck Don

Kirk,
It sounds to me more like a magneto problem than carburetion. You could have a poor condenser or even a weak coil. The condenser is the easiest to check. Just substitute another. As for spark plugs, I prefer the Champion D-23. This is a hotter plug for tractors not under heaavy loads.
