I'm looking at a 4230, 74 model, quad range, cab tractor. It has a vibration at 800 to 1000 rpms. Its fine at idle and up at 1500 rpms. What could be causing this and is it something to be worried about. It drives good, all the gears seem ok but of course I have only just started looking at it. I had a 4430 a few years ago so I'm not unfamiliar with the tractors but any advice is always appreciated. Thanks in advance and God bless.
Gary

While you're looking at the drive shaft and bushings check out the crankshaft pulley, thats the engine balancer, look at the condition of the rubber between the outside groove area and the inside hyd. coupler hub to see if there is cracks or chunks of rubber missing and also see how true it runs while you feel the vibration. And if you happen to take the coupler off try prying lightly back and forth on the pulley to see if the crank maybe broke. Worked on a selfpropelled chopper with an engine vibration and found a broken crankshaft. Let us know what you find. chris

Thanks for the help! Question though? How could the motor run with the crank broke? I will get to look at it closer on Monday as they will be closed tommorrw. Gary

If I remember right the crank was broke between the fifth main thrust bearing and the fifth rod bearing. The break stayed together since there was two mains behind the crack to support the crank and flywheel so it held itself together. Funny thing is I went to the field where they were running it and didn't find the problem until we got it into the shop after he drove it out of the field and onto the truck. Once the chopper was in the shop I did some more looking and found an inspection cover on the bell housing, removed this then pryed the flywheel and moved it back and forth more than is allowed. One thing is the tractor outside go look at it while nobody is around that way you can check it out better without anybody looking over your shoulder, you can take your time and might find other things that you wouldn't if you're in a hurry. please let us know what you find. thanks chris

Even though you may not here it as sometimes you can, it may be your hydraulic pump coupler drive bushings. I have already had people complain of vibration to where they could feel it in there feet a certain low RPMs but could not detect the cause and find a that a busing and sometimes a bushing drive bolt be failed. Check you front hydraulic pump drive and see what it looks like. Take it apart and check it don't just glance at it as you might be looking right at your problem and not see it. Also give the fan a wiggle to check the water pump bearing as well. Good Luck Dave W.
