I have a cracked on my 720 gas! It is cracked in the exhaust side of the head. The head didn't leak water into the oil. No steam came out the exhaust pipe. A guy told me that the head couldn't be fixed. The guy fixing my head told me he might could fix the head by hammeing the crack since the wasn't leaking water. But said he wouldn't put much money in it. Not having much luck with my first John Deere. Can a crack be fixed or is better to get a another head?

Head cracks can be fixed by someone who knows what they are doing. Not by welding or hammering. A kit has been around for 20 years or more that allows a person to drill and fill the crack with a threaded screw that breaks off in the crack. This process is repeated until the crack has been seemed together from one end to the other with these special threaded plugs. Then a tool is used to punch the steel and seem it together. I don't know all the high tech lingo on this process but I had it done on my tractor head and have had no problems at all. Thanks.

Rooster, My 720G was using coolant in the #2 cyl.when torn down a bad cylinder head stud was found along w/headgasket failure. Also a crack was found in the #2 exhaust valve seat fortunately the crack was ground out while installing hardened valve seats. This was 4 yrs. ago and no problems to date. Our 720 is more or less a work tractor (it has a front end loader), not one of our parade queens.

Rooster, most cracks can be repaired, but it takes a special person with good knowledge & correct tools to do it correctly. If the person doing the repair is good, his cost of repair is usually high.
~Hammering a crack closed doesn't sound like the correct way to repair a crack & if the crack repair is not done correctly it could grow & cause future expensive problems.
~Sometimes it is cheaper to get another head...

The crack is on #2 exhaust valve seat and runs about 4" up to the top of the head. My wife says I don't need any future expense. Ha! Thank you for the information.

That sounds like a pretty extensive crack to me. I think I would find another head - just be sure to have that one checked for cracks also, and get it from a reputable supplier that will allow you to return it if it's cracked.
