JD B hard start-magneto?

Looking at buying a 41 JD B, but it has to be pulled to start. Owner says magneto is bad. I understand a magneto rebuild is ~$150 or +$400 new. Anything else I should look out for? Any suggestions for a source to get parts? Or could it just be bad points, plugs, dist. cap?

Thanks,
KEG

My A did that ran fine after pull started. Broken impulse spring in the mag was the problem. Turn over, listen for the loud click in the mag, no click = broken spring.

I have a B that ran before I painted it last summer and after I painted it it didn't start without a pull. After many hours of tinkering me and my dad figured out that the gasket that separates the mag cover from the mag had disinigrated in the pressure washing causing the rotor end to rub through the metal pins in the distributor cover. Check to make sure the gasket is there. That is what held me up the whole time.

From what I read some weeks ago, sounded like the impulse spring in the mag was bad. I know that mag parts are pretty reasonable and you ought to be able to fix it yourself most of the time. If it were a bad coil, bad points etc. in the mag, pulling it might start it but it won't run worth a poop afterward. Clooney said the timing advance goes away once the motor is turning 250 RPM or so which I think means the impulse timing becomes not an issue if you pull the tractor to start. I hooked up a flat belt to my B to trouble shoot it and found a bad mag. Good mag made it click right off.

KEG, without seeing it or more information, as Larry says, it could be anything. A weak mag coil, broken impulse (does it snap when turning over slowly), oxidized points or rust on the magnetic rotor can all effect starting.
~As for the cost & what the problem could be depends on what kind of mag is on it, if a Wico C or X the cost of repair will be low & the ease of repair will be good. If an Edison-Splitdorf or Fairbanks Morse mag, the cost will be high, the ease of repair will be difficult & parts will be almost impossible to find. If it doesn't have a Wico mag, a good used or rebuilt one isn't too expensive & would probably be cheaper than repairing either an E-S or F-M mag.

The B can be persnickety. Could be low compression, dirty carb, timing not right, bad plugs wires, etc. Is it hand start or electric?
If it runs when it is pulled, and sounds ok then, it may be just timing or carb. If the price is right, I wouldn't be too concerned with the mag. Can't be too much wrong with the mag if it runs after pulling. Could be a broken impulse spring. could be 50 different things, but since it runs, if everything else is ok except the hard start, I would go for it.
