I have a 4010 jd console shifter, and while the shifter does seem to work fine the tractor seems to be stuck in two gears when i let the clutch out. Took top cover off trans. to look inside everything seems to be working.

I have several of these tractors do this an what I have found so far is that when the shift linkage gets worn and loose enough the lower shift cam travels too far when put into park. When the transmission is put into park, the lower shift cam moves both shift forks into gear on the lower shaft(pinion shaft). When the cam travels too far, the front shift fork slips past the spring on the cam and therefore doesnot move back when shifted out of park. You will probably have to drain some oil out to see it with the top cover off. Gently pry the spring forward and hold the front lower shift fork back while letting the cam pivot down into position. Good luck and if you need any more help, repost or e-mail me.

The 4010 "park" is achieved by shifting the lower shaft into two gears at the same time. Watch the lower shaft carefully as you pull it out of park and make sure the gears are disengaging. It may be kind of hard to see down in there. Also, look for a bent or broken shifting fork on the lower shaft.
