I recently posted a picture of a 2520 Ser.#2389x in the Photo's,according to the reference material I checked this tractor is a 1973.Is this possible?
One of our more observant viewers a Mr Douglas commented he also purchased a 1974 4020 ?Is this possible,or an example of another no-it-all online authority pulling my leg?

I too have a late 20's series tractor (JD 1020D) that was manufactured in 1973 but "purchased" in early 1974.

Remember, the the production serial number data indicates the "production" year, but the time period for inventory to work through the distribution and sales process can easily be six months, or longer.

FWTW... 1973-74 was really a slow sales year for the all farm equipment due to Arab embargos, inflation, slow economy, depressed farm prices, etc. Therefore, a 4020 could possibly have been purchased in 1974. Just a thought.

Back then it was common for tractors to be 2 or
3 years old before being sold, especially the
powershift 4020's.People were afraid of them,
now that's all they want.Dad bought a brand new
630 back in 1965,that was built in 1960.

This is true , but when you go to trade or sell they go by the year of production not purchase . We bought a new '68 4020D in '69 , dealer found a few of them , $2-3,000 cheaper than the new '69s then five years later at trade time it was still a '68 , worth a little less than a '69 . As far as Powershift goes , we've had several 20's 30's and a '40 , far as I'm concerned they are the best , haven't had any trouble with any of them . Still have a 3020D , 4020D , 4430 and a 4840 , all powershift . The 4430 is about the only PS around here , got it new had to special order it , they wondered why we wanted such a thing .

John,
A book I have shows 2520 starting in '69 with #17000 , '70 - #19416 , '71 -#22000 , '72 - #22911 and '73 - #23865 , shows production 1969-1973 . Your number doesn't match , are you sure you have all the ##s , if there is another # after 2389 that would make it a '73 . The book I'm going by is John Deere Tractors , I have some others but this is the only one I have close by .
4020's----1964 to 1972
3020's----1964 to 1972
2020's----1965 to 1971
1520's----1968 to 1973
1020's----1965 to 1973
4000's----1969 to 1972
4320's----1971 to 1972
4520's----1969 to 1970
4620's----1971 to 1972
5020's----1966 to 1972
That book was put out by Deere and I think the info is about as close as you can get .
There is NO SUCH THING as a 1974 4020 , that I KNOW for sure .

JDJIM,I put the last number as an x,because the last time I put the whole number I had three people contact me to say it was there old tractor and was stolen in a divorce settlement. So I no longer give full number on anything. Thanks,John
