I have a 720 diesel that has a problem with leaking fuel around fill neck when running. I've replaced cap but it still leaks. Would like to get fixed before painting. I'm sure someone has the same problem, whats the fix?

720:

Do you mean out the top of the neck? Lots of them leak where the neck is soldered to the tank, too.

Quite a few seem to slop out the top of the tank neck. We had an "A" with the old "Use Clean Fuel - Keep it Clean" gas cap and it wouldn't loose a drop. Our 70 Diesel always seemed to slop it out. I thought it was just a bad cap gasket, but I guess not.

When I took the tank off during the restoration, there was a sheet of metal in the tank that was rattling. Turns out there is a vertical baffle in the front of the tank, just behind the fill area, and it was broken loose. I have a feeling that many baffles are resting in the bottom of tanks, and that lets the fuel get to rocking and sloshing. I found another tank in good shape with an intact baffle, so we'll see. I think the other fix for that would be to solder or otherwise afix a 10-12" piece of muffler tube down into the tank through the filler neck. I think then the fuel could not slosh out.

If you find a fix, please let all of us diesel owners know !
