Will a 466 cid engine fit into a 4230 tractor with a 404 cid (without modification)? I've got an opportunity to buy a 4440 with a bad transmission cheap (less than salvage). I thought maybe the engine might fit and save me a ton of money. thanks

We are of the opinion that you will have to make some intake and exhaust modifications if you decide to keep the 466 turbocharged. You could install the 466 in the 4230, then use the intake and exhaust set up off of a 4430 on this engine. That would allow you to have a turbo and minimize your modifications. As long as you don't get crazy or abuse it, the 4230 powertrain should handle the 466 - I would take it to a shop and dyno it after installation. I would set the hp to about 120, the tractor and the engine will live a long time at this level. I guess by the time you change transmissions, final drives, differential, etc. you may as well sell both tractors and buy something different, whereas the engine swap would be fairly straightforward. Good luck.

I'd go with fixing the 4440 and sell the 4230 if you don't need it, with the 4440 you get alot more tractor. If you did decide to switch motors Taking the turbo off could cause you some troubles because the 4440 fuel system is set for the higher horse, for sure you need to turn the horses down because a 4230 rear end wont take a 4440's horsepower.
Good luck

Yes, The 466 engine will bolt into the 4230 but the turbo and air connections will be a place where some modification will be required. You could remove the turbo setup and replace it with the original 4230 manifolds. Not to tell you what to do but if the two tractors had the same type of transmissions both quads or power shifts I would take the transmission from the 4230 and put it into the 4440. The biggest difference with the quad is the two speed as one is direct and under and the other is direct and over. The other difference is the width of the final drives, which could be switched if you wanted to. (I would) The 4440 also has a heavier differential that also could be switched back into the 4230 case. The clutch housings are different length and would have to be kept with the respective tractor. The transmission case and internals are for the most part the same and this swap could be done if the two transmissions were of the same type. Good Luck Dave W.

Why worry about the turbo fitting under the sheet metal? Split both tractors and switch the front halves with the rear halves. You may have to use your 4230 flywheel on the 466. By using the 4440 sheet metal the turbo is not a problem and the front pump problem you were about to encounter is solved too. It is also a much simpler job. The biggest problem you will now encounter is getting the hydraulic and steering lines all the right connections and length. Take your time and you will find the best way for you to do this. Just for fun put 4230 decals on it and head for the pulling track. That`ll spin some heads! Any questions feel free to email me. I`ll help anyway I can.

Better study your lesson a little more as you will find that the cab on the 4230 is mounted 4 to 6 inches lower on the transmission than the 4440. this will put the 4440 front / hood about 8 to 12 inches up into the windshield and the cab door wont open! Not as easy as you might think. There is really no easy way to do it if you want to do it right. I didn't say it was going to be easy. I was more concerned about doing it right. Both tractors share the same common transmission case and internal shafts if they were of the same transmission type. Dave W.

Did some more checking here and discovered that if you wanted to use the 4430 intake idea, you would have to use the 4430 radiator also. The air intake pipes run on different sides on the 42 and 44 - left on the 4230 and right on the 4430. I would just pull the 466, install it in the 4230, and trade any extra parts you have for the 4430 intake parts and radiator.
