It depends on the age of the plow and the type of bottoms it has. The Syracuse bottoms on the older plows were silver and, when new, they had "Genuine SYRACUSE Deep Chilled" stencilled on in red on the point. Later, about 1953 when the newer type bottoms came into use, they were black on the front side and usually green on the back, having the bottom type stencilled on above the John Deere emblem. Bob

Based on the original question, I'd guess that his plow is older than 1953. Did all the plows have the Syracuse Chilled plow bottoms on them, or was that an option. I remember seeing that name/description, but don't remember the details.

Plow bottoms are interchangable on the frames. The dealer ordered the plow frames in and put on whatever bottoms suited the soils and conditions in his area.

Thanks for the reply. I think "chilled" must have been a manufacturing or hardening process, as Oliver used to advertise their plows that way.

Chilled iron has better wear characteristic's than other steel available at the time these old plows were made.

The manual for the JD 44 plow says that "the polished surfaces of the plow bottoms are varnished, and those on the coulters and jointers are blue lacquered. this protective coating should be removed before using"

If you want the plow to look like it just came from the dealer, go with what Steve says - that's how they looked new.

If you want it to look like it's ready to be put away for the winter, get those parts scoured down to bare metal and put a coat of grease on them with a rag or a brush - that will look authentic!

Black would in my opinion look the best. As some farmers use black protective coats on their moldboard and shovels now.
