On CBS evening news, 101 airborn using gators getting around near Kandahar. Was surprised, as I was unaware the Army was using these John Deere utility vehicles.

I saw on the news where they are also using a type of pipe frame vehicle, looks like a dune buggy, with the 4-cyl air cooled VW engine. Has two rocket launchers on the sides, forward mounted grenade launcher, forward mounted 50 cal and rear mounted 50 cal. Crew of 3 or 4 and goes like a bat out of H. Special Forces vehicle I think. They say it is so fast no bad guys can get a bead on them to shoot.

As is said here though it sure is nice to see the JD Gators there too!

Dave

I sure hope they go faster than the one we have (12-15mph downhill, 6-8mph uphill empty), it is a '99 model 4X2. It sure is handy, even if it is slow! Thanks for sharing the info! Later, pat

www.deere.com has a description of the military Gator. A three cylinder Yanmar diesel in the 6x4 chassis and some other upgrades make then fast, light & manoeuvrable. In these days of tight budgets the military could purchase a whole fleet of them for the cost of just research & development of a similar vehicle.Plus they are cheap enough to just leave behind & writeoff. Low ground pressure is less libel to set off some kinds of mines. What says "US of A" better than something with Deere printed on the side? We have gas 4x2's & 6x4's at work used as firetrucks & ambulance. The gas 6x4's are real quick up to 18mph after we set the throttle cables to the correct length. Halfway through the arc of linkage travel is "fastest". The 4x2's are slower to accelerate but will fly past the 6x4's when wound up.We set the gas 4x2's adjustment at the throttle pedal & govenenor linkage for max travel/tension on the spring. Not a recommended adjustment for those who won't slowdown when conditions require it. If some dimwit was shooting at me however, all the mph possible would be welcome.
