i just bought 22 acres and could use a 60 hp. tractor. a C-IH dealer has both tractors, wants almost the same money for both, 560 $4500 ,gas and the Deere $4900 diesel. Which is better? He is really pushing the 560.He says when the Deere is under full load, the 560 would walk away with it.Also says the 730 sounds like a fat man farting, then he started laughing. Which sould i buy?

Tom, you've got a lively discussion started. In my humble opinion, if you're thinking about using a loader eventually, I'd opt for the 560. The 730 is a handful with the hand clutch and loader controls. There's good points and bad points with both tractors, as the other posts have pointed out. Personally, I believe the JD 730 will be the better tractor if you're looking for something to fix up and do light tillage work with. You'll get your money back and maybe more if you decide to sell it. Plus, Deere & Company is still in business and you can still get many factory parts for the 730. For fuel economy, I'd also opt for the 730. As far as the sound of a fat man farting, well, I like that KLUNG-KLUNG-KLUNG sound of the big two cylinders igniting their fuel and air charges on the compression strokes. It's unique and a signature John Deere feature. Go to a tractor show and watch a crowd gather when one of those two lungers starts up.
As far as maintenance, I'd also recommend the 730. The engines can last a long time with a 1,100 RPM working speed. The diesel 730 will be harder to start in cold weather than the 560 gas and if the 730 has the 24V starting system, you'll be charging the batteries pretty often in cold weather.

Whatever you decide to buy, make sure you DRIVE BOTH TRACTORS first, check out the features, listen to them run, take them both for a gallop down the road and check for front end shimmy and wobble. Check the brakes, check the hydraulics, check the radiator levels before starting them and check the radiator levels again when the tractors are warm then check the radiator levels again after they've been shut down. Listen for transmission gear noise. Alot of the 730s have noisy third gears because that's the favorite gear for plowing. Also, pull the flywheel cover and look for cracks in the 730's flywheel. Make sure the damn flywheel hasn't been welded onto the crankshaft. I've seen that done before. What it all boils down to is that it's your money and your choice. Good luck. You have enough information to make an informed decision.

I've seen a lot of good, sensible comments and suggestions here, and a few controversial ones which we always see on an IH vs. JD question. A long time ago (1959) I used a new Farmall 460 for a summer and just loved it, as I was used to a '49 JD 'A' as a main tractor. TA reliabilty notwithstanding, it was great tractor!

I would certainly agree with the folks who suggested a smaller utiltiy tractor with modern-day features.

Whatever you do, would you keep us posted?

Thanks,

Stan

either one of these are good but the major answer is there used! we all take a gamble on these when we buy them. no matter how much we look at something when its used when we get it home something breaks. it may be just my luck though.

p.s. take the 560 its cheaper than green

I own 23 acres and have owned a variety of tractors, including JD and IH, so I will give you my opinion based on that. I wouldn't worry too much about broken TA's, loose flywheels, fuel consumption, pulling power, etc. You ain't gonna wear either tractor out on 22 acres or bankrupt yourself at the fuel company, and either of them is certainly plenty strong for your farm. My advice is -- Providing these tractors are in comparable condition and you just want to play or start a collection, go for the Deere since it is a better investment than the Farmall.
If you just want a work tractor, forget these locomotives and find a good utility model. The 560 and 730 are long framed, have Catagory II hitches, are taller than many barn or shed doors, take lots of room to maneuver, etc.

If the 730D is a elect start its a no brainer, buy the 730.

Look for two things on 730, Live pto, see if operating ok and maybe you can get the dealer to hook up to something to give it a load, parts and labor could be 1000.

Crankshaft end play, orig specs 5 to 10 thou. Ive got one apart now that had 200 thou which means the thrust washers are gone. Parts are cheap but a lot of work.

I would suggest you find someone that knows the 2 cyl tractors and get his opinion on this tractor.

Since the dealer doesnt think much about the 730 give him a low ball offer, dont worry about losing either one of these, theres always another deal out there. Good luck

Buy a Farmall Super H or a John Deere B and add a 3 pt. hitch kit. You'll be happier with either of these than with a I-H 560 or a "It's Flywheel Time Again" 730.

Tom,

I don't know about a 560 Gas, but we farm w/ a 560D. It has 9,000hrs on it, the T/A works great and the rearend is fine. We also farm w/ a 730D and it's an awesome tractor. I like the green stuff, but in my opinion they both are good tractors.

Well, I tell you out front I am an IH guy. I think the 560 is a very strong tractor! The one we have is very good on gas, has plenty of power, and also doesn't sound "like a fat man farting" ;-). Bad, points of the 560 are the lack of torque and the cramped operators platform. The good points about the 730 is the fuel comsumption, clear operating platform and 3pt hitch(I personally think 2pt is much nicer). The bad points of the 730 are hand clutch and the putt-putt noise.

Do what you want, but heres what I would do. Go find yourself a nice 450G Farmall, now it will drink the fuel but the torque and smooth running 4 cyl engine are unbelieveable!!!! Heck it will even crank out just as much hp as the 560!

Can't resist putting in my 2 cnts. Which tractor is in better shape? I think the 560 is a priced a bit high unless its about perfect. Either one of these tractors can eat a lot of money in repair bills. My suggestion would be to try to find someone who knows these tractors to help look them over. Even though I'm a John Deere fan, for a loader tractor I think you would like a foot clutch better. On 22 acres fuel costs would not be that much either way, so my choice would be the machine thats the best mechanically. Good Luck.

Tom,
Salvage man at the bottom I feel has a good Idea, However if you feel you need to buy one of these tractors I'll throw my crappy oppinion on top of the pile of everyone elses oppinions. The 730 D Jd is a good tractor, but if it has a pony starting system, and you don't want to convert it to electric start, I'd pass on it. I personally like the gas two lungers better. With electronic ignition, and alittle tender loving care, they are enjoyable machines, that voice out a sound that no other tractor company ever duplicated, and to an enthusiast can make your heart pound faster, the day seem brighter, and put a smile on your face. Yes I am a Deere man. However,I also like the 560 farmalls. It will use alittle more fuel, but when painted up nice, and running correctly you will have a machine to be proud of. If you are wanting just a working tractor, and have money to repair whatever is wrong, purchase the 560. If you are a collector, and want something to use; and ever thought you might need to sell at a drop of the hat, purchase the Deere You'll at least get most of your money back. Just don't let anyone tell you the 560's crap, because if maintained properly, they are just as good as anyother tractor in that power range made during that time fram. Either one is probobly better than the new tractors being made in that power range. Good Luck, and have fun spending your money. Greg H.

Tom,

Of course the IH dealer is pushing the 560, it's priced at about twice what it is worth. Look at the IH Board, there is a post about a guy looking at a 600 hour 560 for $6000 and they're telling him to offer $4000 for it and a run of the mill 560 is worth from $2000-3000. You don't say how the 730D is equipped: 3-pt, factory wide front, fenders, dual hydraulics, condition of tires? If it has just a factory 3-pt or wide front it is priced right on the money. The 560 is grossly overpriced. And think what you could get out of each if you decided to sell. Even if you have to pay the dealers asking price for the 730 you'll get that money back but only about half the price of the 560. And, don't pay attention to the guys knocking the rear end or TA of the 560. Early 560's had problems with the rear end but were fixed by the factory and these and later ones had no problems. The TA's are a wear item and will wear out, but are not the disaster the Deere guys make them out to be. We were surrounded by 560's when I grew up and they were good tractors. With the little more power they had over our 720G and the TA they would outwork it any day of the week. And by the way, I'm not an IH guy, I've got a 620, 720G, 2 720D, 730D and almost forgot a 60 LPG, and most are used and WORKED.

With not being able to see either machine, & I'm partial to Deere. But if the 730 hasen't had any work done to it for some time, you could be in for a handful. I know the parts for either can dig well into your pocket. The IH doesn't burn that much fuel, & neither will the 730. Check the engine oil in the 730 & see if its over full? There can be many ways for diesel fuel to enter the crank case, & I have had to fix everyone of them on ours. But I love the tractor, & would do it again if I had to. I don't know anything about the weak points of a 560, have a neighbor who has since new & can't wear it out. But the man takes care of everything. Thats the secret, how well its been cared for, for all these years. RLA

Had to get my 2 cents worth in. In this part of the country there are only two kinds of IH tractors with TA available - those with the TA out, and those which just had the TA replaced. Go figure.

i've got both- red and green, and like them both. i found the best thing to do with the t/a on my 706 is leave it alone. i just find the right gear and leave it there. if it's pulling too hard in places with the t/a ahead, i just leave it pulled back. with only 22 acres, working the t/a back and forth won't save him enough time to justify having to replace it.

FOR JUST 22 ACRES EITHER THE 560 OD 730 ARE
OVERKILL. UNLESS YOU JUST WANT THAT BIG A TRACTOR.
FOR GENERAL CHORES ON 22 ACRES I WOULD SUGGEST
3 COLORS -830 3 CYL JD,2240,2150,2350 UTILITY
3000,3600,3910, 4000,4600,4610 FORD UTILITY
574,584,484,485, IH/CASE IH UTILITY
ALL OF THESE RANGE FROM 35 TO 55 HP, ALL NEWER
MODELS CAPABLE OF DOING THE JOB. I KNOW THIS IS
THE JD BOARD, BUT I HAVE A JD 2355, FORD 4000,
AND IH 484. AND ALL 3 ARE GOOD MACHINES. ON OUR 80 ACRE FARM IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA

Maybe it has the legendary 460/560 rear end, that tends to fail in almost every 560. I could maybe comprehend a 560 Diesel, but not a gas. That guy obviously hasnt seen a 730 diesel lug, I would bet my life on a STOCK 560 D vs. a STOCK 730 D. We have a 730 gas and a 706 D. The 730 will pull away from the 706. GO FOR THE 730!! Any two cylinder is a investment. THEY ONLY GO UP IN VALUE!!!

The 730 is the best bet between the two, by far. The 560 was really a warmed-over "M" with two extra jugs - Plenty of power but poorly balanced. When weighted to take advantage of what the motor could offer, the rear-end often couldn't hold it all together under heavy load. Not to mention problems with the torque amplifier.

In addition, the 730 is much more comfortable to operate, save its hand-clutch, which can be a detriment if you plan to back wagons all day or other such rearward-looking precise chores. Go green - you won't regret it - I own a Farmall & have operated both the 460/560 tractors and the Deere 630/730, so hopefully my opinion isn't terribly biased!

Ask this dealer to hook the two tractors together, drawbar to drawbar, and see which tractor pulls who around the lot! (For safety reasons, I wouldn't actually do this, but the idea is to ASK the dealer to do this). This has been tried before and you should know that the red tractor didn't win, and in fact had it's TA go out and had to be towed to the shop!

The 560 is really a 1939 M with a six cylinder engine and no real improvements to the rear end to handle the extra 20 hp, PLUS it had the poorly engineered TA. Ask yourself: Why is it ALWAYS necessary to ask someone selling an IH if the TA is any good?

Finally, if that 730D and 560g were sitting on a JOHN DEERE dealer's lot the prices would likely be a bit different. The Deere dealer would KNOW that his 730 was worth a LOT more than the 560 and the price difference would be more like $5500 for the 730 and $3500 (or less) for the 560!

Where is this bargain 730 located at? If you get the 560 there will be a lot of people who might like to know where a 730, on a DEALER lot can be had for this little money!

Hey Tom, I bet he's pushing that 560! Two make that 3 things make you run for that john deere. First, a gas 560 will go through 12 gallons an hour whenever you put the work to it. Half that for the 730 diesel.

Farmall had two MAJOR and expensive problems with their big hosses including the 560. TA has always been weak. You're forever breaking it in half to fix the TA. The other is the bull gears in the rear end. Farmall tried to use the same rear end in the 460 and 560 that it used in the old M's. Didn't work. The 560 will bust up that rear end every time.

So you have a bona fide turkey vs. one of the most popular John Deeres. If the 730 is good work your best deal on it and don't look back.

Tom----- -

I believe that all of the comments regarding the 560 drive line problems are valid. When Farmall broke their numbered tractors in 1954 they tried to go cheap and use the old M tranny and rear end. Problems mounted with the coming of the 50 and 60 series tractors. I cant tell you that the old M back end will bolt up to the 560, but they are the same animal. That 560 mill is just too much for a late 30s gear design meant for 37 horsepower. Failure was the rule, rather than the exception. If I recall correctly, there eventually came a factory fix package with parts and designs that would eventually fall into the 06 tractors. If installed by a dealer, a notation was made, somehow, on the serial number tag. Take a look for this.

I-H troubles with T/A are legendary. Another expensive heartbreaker.

On the other side of the coin, that 730D is one of the most sought after of John Deere models. Unless its a mess, its sure to appreciate in value. Hey, we never claimed to be unbiased. This IS a JD board. But I stand by my words.

A final thought. At the local consignment auction last week there were two 560s, both decent but still in their working clothes. Both gas, the narrow front (a little nicer) went for $1500. The wide front brought $1370. A L-o-o-o-o-o-n-g way from $4500.

Another elongated narrative brought to you by

Thats kind of funny. Our '63 560 has never had the TA go bad. And yes it still does tillage work. 560 rear end was updated from the factory in 1959. Come to think about it, that hasn't been apart either, and it this tractor has more than 10,000 hours on it. 12 gallons of fuel an hour?? Have you ever run a 560?? I don't think so!!! I agree with IH1 regarding fuel consumption. I'm a bit surprised that the 560 would even take 6gph, but then we only put the 560 on a silage blower for 70' silo (which went all day without requiring gas). I've also used a couple of 730D, and we worked the living crap out of them pulling 13' equipment on red clay hills. I don't believe it ever drank more than about 2.5gph. Both are good tractors and on 22 acres your never going to work them very hard. If you don't like the hand clutch, then the 560 isn't a bad choice (and I'm heavily biased toward JD...have a 3010D, 52 A, and 4020D). Myself, I think the JD730 is a bit high...it better be in pretty good shape. The 560 is also high. The suggestion to go for a 4010 or 3020 isn't bad if you can find one for around 6gs...not that easy.

Pete, on the 12ft JD disc pulling in 3rd gear in direct drive about 5-6 gph max. I'm speaking the truth on this. A 301 gas in an 806 will run around 6-7gph. Yes, diesels don't run through the fuel like gassers do, but I think 12gph was pretty steep. At 12gph, I would be stopping for fuel every 2.5 hours, and I can go a heck of a lot longer than that. The 560 rear end is not a problem, in over 20 years here in the salvage yard we haven't sold more the a bullgear a year. Of all of the tractors we tear down you can count on a 560 rear end being in good shape. After the 560 was kited they are one of the toughest rearends that were ever built. Now how about the flywheel problems with the 730's. If it was up to me I would pass on both tractors and go find a different one.

Loose flywheels occur because the owners missplace or never read the operators manuals & service as recommended. Not difficult to pull the flywheel cover & set endplay/check torque when also in the shop to check valve lash etc. The amount of 70/720/730 surviving despite abuse is a tribute to the wisdom of Deere engineers & management at the time. Current management & engineers could/should spend more time getting dirty on,in & under todays tractors/equipment however.

I can say the same for the TA 's in the IH tractors. Some people can kill one in no time.
