52 B transmission walks out of 3rd gear under heavy load, replaced shaft end bearings, detent ball and spring, no apparent excessive wear on gears or shifting forks still walks out of 3rd.
Any suggestions ?

Don, that seems to be a common problem on the "B" with high hours on the transmission. The usual cause is worn bearings on the sliding gear shaft. In your case you have already addressed that though. ~Was the L/H case bore worn? Is the input shaft outer bearing bore in the 1st reduction cover worn? Are the snap rings tight to the L/H sliding shaft bearing? Seeing as the sliding gear shaft uses ball bearing & not roller bearings, the end play is controlled by the L/H bearing & not bearing adjustment.
~A weak detent spring or worn detent ball can cause a problem also, but you have already addressed that.
~Can you feel a good detent retention of the sliding fork? If not suspect the notch in the sliding fork shaft is worn & not allowing the ball to hold tight. If worn you might try grinding the notch a little deeper with less rounding of the depression edges. ~If the detent is holding good, that leaves worn bearings on the counter shaft (they would have to be pretty bad to cause gear walk), taper wear on the 3rd gear teeth (either drive, driven or both), or spline wear on the sliding gear shaft or inside the 3rd gear (or both). I have found that spline wear on the sliding gear shaft at the 3rd gear engaged area is a big contributor to gear walk out & that coupled with gear spline wear will allow the gear to wobble a little & walk out of engagement. If that is the problem you might be able to keep it engaged by shimming the 3rd shift fork detent spring a little , & grinding the detent notch in the shift shaft a little deeper to allow the detent ball to hold better, the down side of using the detent to hold the gear engaged under load is accelerated wear on the shift fork due to added side load & harder shifting into & out of 3rd gear.

My 1955 50 does the same thing, if I'm pulling something heavy in 3rd gear it jumps out. Pulling something light (like a bush hog) it does fine, but I usually pull it in 4th anyway!

Clooney, are your suggestions the same for my 50? If so, how hard is it to get in there? I've never worked on a transmission, just lots of engines.

Tnx,
Kerry

Kerry, your 55 model 50 has the same type transmission & shift detent system as the "B", the later 50's (later in 56) used the shifter lock system that Chuck is talking about, unless yours was up dated at one time. ~You can put the later shifter lock system in your 50 (if you can find it, Deere used to offer a kit to do just that) & want to pay the price.
~Usually just increasing the detent spring tension, installing a new detent & deepening the notch in the shift rail will keep your 3rd gear engaged, just don't get so carried away with increasing the detent pressure that you can't shift it.
~This assumes the sliding gear shaft bearings are tight & there isn't excessive taper wear on the gear teeth or sliding gear shaft splines, if there is, repair that first.

My 52 B did that. I thought I did everything to stop it & still did the same worked out of 3rd. I evan went deeper & replaced brgs & checked cluster gears. Then I found {light Bulb comes on} the upper shaft did the wa2ocy. I replaced the shaft with a salvage yard one. With the shaft laying on a known FLAT surface I could .002 under, then turn 180 degree's & couldn't. When you rolled it you could tell. After that it made a 99% improvement.. RLA

you need to renew the upper shaft with one with less wear...also install locking shifter on the 1/3 gear..locking shifters were added to the 50's transmission and also retro fitted for the B's to correct the very problem. Wear on the upper shaft causing a pinching under heavy load and gear will shoot out of position...new detents want stop but locking shifter will hold in place.

Ask Mr. Clooney.....!!!

I have to think that there is a problem with a twisted shaft, or wear on a gear... straight spur gears should run without any side thrust... Usually, the detent spring, or the detent goes bad, and it slips out of gear... Does it push the shift lever out of position..?? Are you sure the shaft bearings are set with no "end play".?? Tapered bearings were not designed to have any "play" in them...
