4840 Question

Hi All,

My 4840 has started "slipping out of park"...

When trying to park on an incline, or sometimes when it is very cold and the tractor is running but not warmed up, my 4840 will sometimes jump out of the "park lock"...

While it is rolling, you can hear a faint, but definite, gear grating noise...

Is this a cable or linkage adjustment problem, or is it going to require "major surgery" to correct??

Thanks for any advice,
Howard Henderson
Stratford, TX

PS - Thanks to Clooney and Bob-Wyo and everyone else for the previous great answers! The only other thing this discussion group needs is a coffee pot and a waitress!! :)

Good idea about the waitress. I keep the coffee pot on all the time but I have to go get it myself. LOL

I believe the park pawl is the same setup that was used on the 30 series.if im right, over on the right side of the tractor,in front of the rear axle, there is a lever that operates the park pawl.it is not very big and has a coil spring wrapped around it,under the spring is a pin that goes thru the lever and shaft(pin could be broke}the cable pulls the spring which pulls the lever and puts tension on the pawl,if with the shift lever in park the cable pulls the spring forward away from the lever then the cable adjustment and linkage are ok,and the problem is probably is in the pawl

Howard,
Would this be a power shift? If so, Deere has a kit for these old tractors that includes a new top plate and spring.

The faint gear rattling noise might be the sound of the park pawl rattling on the teeth of the gear it rides on. Again, that's if it's a power shift.

I believe the quad range used a two gears and not a park pawl.

Howard , for some reason it's not pulling all the way in to park. Remove the console inside and look at the linkage. The part that pulls the cable could be worn and/or broken if not the cable may just need adjusted , pull it all the way in to park by hand and adjust accordingly. Don
