Could someone give me some info.or refer me to a site to get info. on a 1986 John Deere 850 MFWD with standard transmission. I wanted to know if that transmission came with a high low as I wanted to run a tiller. Does it come with a 2 stage clutch or live pto.Does it have power steering. Are their any common problems with the 850 thanks. Chris

I have an 81 850, it has a four speed with a hi/lo and does not have a two stage clutch. Power steering was a dealer installed option, easy to spot as it has a hydraulic cylinder on the left side attached to the steering rod.
There are two versions of the 850. The updated model that came out sometime in the late 80's has (as I understand it) a two stage clutch and power steering may be standard. The new model does not have a compression release to aid starting. The new model has a spin on hydraulic oil filter under the right footrest, while the old model just has an internal metal screen in a housing underneath the tractor.
According to my parts manual, the old model is serial number 009000 and less, the new model is 009001 and higher.
I've had my 850 for 4 years and it has been a very good tractor.

I have a 1983 750 and assume the 850 is similar. The transmission has 4 gears forward and 1 reverse with a high and low range, giving 8 speeds forward and 2 speeds in reverse. The lowest speed should handle a tiller with no problem. I'm sure the 850 doesn't have live pto or two-stage clutch. Power steering was a dealer installed option. The tractor was made in Japan with Yanmar engine. It is a good tractor, but like anything can be abused beyond its limits. I have a loader on my tractor which is hard service and have had no problems in 18 years. I previously owned a Cub Lo-Boy with a loader. What a gutless wonder. Check out the tractor and see if it was treated poorly.

What exactly do you mean by "gutless wonder". Are you refering to the JD or the cub lo-boy and is that a good statement or a bad statement toward the machine? I am looking at both of these machines and need some feed back. Thanks
