I have a 49 G and would like to know what everything should be painted- including the generator, carb (big nut), air breather, and the exterior metal part of the mag

When they came out of the factory in 49 were the axles painted green, if not were they just not painted at all?

I read that the axles came from the factory as plain steel with burlap wrapped on them and a very light bit of oil to keep them from rusting.

The generator should be a sort of semi-gloss black, like the lights, the mag I'd just leave what's metal unpainted and don't paint the bakelite or whatever the cap is, at all. You can leave the axles unpainted any color or use flat black or some kind of clear paint just to prevent rusting, but not yellow for sure. Some like to leave the carburetor unpainted or black, but on new tractors they were the regular green, so were the aircleaner and starter. The seat cushion and backrest should be black. No green front wheel hubs or wheel weights. One thing--it's your tractor, so really you can paint it any way you like.
