B Wheel/Tire Questions

I have a set of spoke wheels that I bought and restored for my model B. Went down to the dealer to get a set of 9.5 X 36 Firestones put on and everything seemed to go OK. After I got home I looked at them and noticed that the tires were not even close to being seated. The rim of the wheel comes about one half to three quarters of an inch up onto the sidewall. Went back to the dealers this morning and we all agreed what the problem is but we are at a loss for a solution. A 38 inch tire would be way too big. The bead on the tire is about a half inch wide, the rim on the wheel is about an inch, or maybe more, wide. They soaped the tires up good and put 90 lbs of air in them and they didn't get any closer to seating. So, I appears that tires made back in the olden days had a different/wider bead on them. Is this the case? Do people restoring these for "Show and Tell" not worry about seating the tires on these rims? Any info or guidance would be appreciated.

I have a 1938 B with round spokes and 9.5x36 tires. on these the outside flare of the rim does not fit flush to the tire. However the beads are seated out where the should be and everything works just fine. I also have a pair of cast wheels with the same style of rim, mounted with some oldstyle 11x36 tires. On these the flare fits flush to the tire. I hope this applies to your question. Please don't put 90 pounds of air on one of these assemblys. someone could get hurt.

Had a similar problem when I put new tires on my 38A rear Spokes. What I did was jack up the tractor and drop it with no air in the tires, then rotate and do it again, and finally took a spin around the block witjh about 2 lbs of air. Anyway they finally seated. The adding of extra air pressure just did not work on these rims. Russ

find another tire shop. anybody that would put 90 lbs air pressure in a rear tractor tire to try seating the bead doesn't want to live long. if they were not seated properly when they left their doors, that doesn't say much for their professionalism, nor their knowledge of tires.
