Hey Gman-- I see in one of the other posts (lemons) that you are a full time JD tech. I am as well though not as long as you(15 yrs)by the sound of things. I do echo your take on what you said about folks knocking mother Deere. I heard a lot of that when I worked for a MF dealer (!) for a few years. Throw up a post if you want and we could share some "lies" maybe. BTW I live in Canada so we see some of those distant Deeres like 2130 3130 2120, 510,710 etc. We even get to work on 2 cyls at times, including a time when I fixed a 630 and a 9510 on the same road call. Life is OK!!

Hello to JDGnut and thanks for the post--the guy from Lincoln Neb. was called Patch or Petch. Can't be sure. We have used Service Advisor a bit but know it will soon be a regular thing. We are supposed to be building a new shop /location for our dealership ths spring so a lot of the management is concentrating on that--hopefully that will get S.A. on its own,not tied to anyother computers (as it should be) and work better. We battle with rats and raccoons in combines. We had a 'coon or two pretty well wipe out the central electronics box on a 9500 last fall--too bad it didn't have come home feature on it That was a fix-it-where-it-fell job. BTW was out on road calls today--doing some pre-season service for one of our bigger accounts--15/40+50 flows p-r-e-t-t-y slow at -8 degrees C Sorry guys can't remember the F conversion EH?

Ahh.. That was Ol Fred.. haha.. Fred Petch... he's a tractor puller too.. he has a turbine powered puller.. Plus 50 is slow at -8.. hmm.. I guess I don't have the problem here in TX.. I have been running the Plus 50 in my truck until the last oil change.. (Dodge-cummins.. just changed to Amsoil.. might be changing back.) I had 250,000 on my chevy when I sold it... always ran the plus 50 in it.. it sure was clean on the inside..

Thanks for the post Gman. Yes I know what you are saying about the older stuff being a relaxing change from the 20 some page diagnostic of the day. Also a thing I like to say is that the last day I do it is the smartest I'll be. I work for a dealer in southwest Ontario about 2 hrs east of Detroit MI. Our customers run from nurserymen with small utility tractors (1040,thru 4000,5000 and TEN series ) to livestock/cashcrop operators with 8430,8630 on through to 9000's Combines 100's through 50 series. We have no track tractors or STS combines out of our dealership. I have at home for my "therapy" a '47 BR (worlds slowest restoration) a '59 430 W a 12A combine and a 95 combine. Was at a Deere school a month back with one of your countrymen teaching--I think he was from the Lincoln Neb area. Good "talking " Gman, keep up the interesting posts, Bob

Nice to meet you Bob W. To be honest, I've only been turning wrenches for about 8 yrs. In addition to what I listed, I also worked on heavy equipment at a CAT dealership for 2.5 years. The dealership I work at now is in east-central Nebraska. The vast majority of our tractor business is over 150 HP row-crop, although we have a few 9000 series fwds out. I guess I feel like I'm fairly knowledgeable for my age, although I learn something new everyday. Never really subscribed to the adage that you have to be old to know something, although I definitely respect other people's opinions. I have done some in-shop work on two-cylinders in addition to work on my own tractors ('48 G and a 60). Sure is nice to rebuild a carb on a 630 after you've been tearing your hair out working on a 8000 series electrical problem. Like I said, I don't know anywhere near everything about Deeres, but I'm honest about what I do know. Seems like our hobby would be better off if more people were that way. Thanks BobW.

You would be surprised at who is floating around on these boards, there are a lot of JD Tech that like to dink with this old stuff when off the clock.. (and sometimes on the clock.. lol..) There are a few factory people that regularly post on this board, too. Bob W., I probably know the guy from Neb that taugh the school that you went attended. (maybe, Brian, Kenton, Reggie, or Jerry.. there are a few others from that area, too.) I have worked with these guys, but I work out of Texas... G-Man... the rats driving you nutts on the 8000's.. hahaa.. The computers make a nice spot from them to make a nest... I just got a 9520T and a 8420 Wheel in to do a little testing.. Anyone using Service Advisor yet???? Well, I'll catch ya later.. better get back to work... JDGnut

Nice to see another JD tech on here. I didn't take JD Ag Tech at Milford, I took Diesel Truck and Construction, but I know who you're talking about - have been back to Milford for service schools. We don't have too many problems with rats in our 8000s, but most of our customers keep their tractors very clean also. LOL. I can't believe I can work on this stuff all day and still want to mess with my G on my time off. Gets in your blood though. Just finished an 8410 that had an excessive engine noise complaint, the front of those engines sound like a corn sheller when you're pulling 280 hp, but DTAC says it's normal so.... And yes, we do use Service Advisor extensively, have even had the computer out in the shop hooked to a tractor. It is quite the diagnostic tool. Like I said, nice to hear from all you techs. Talk to you later.

I don't know who is teaching the AG Tech program in Milford these days... but I should be running into those guys next month.. we have a big meeting planned.
Well.. I wish the guys down here knew what a barn or shop was for.. other than to store junk in.. and leave the tractor outside... Down here.. lots of the tractors sit outside... (Dad wouldn't even think of let me leave one of his tractors sitting outside..) The rats like to chew on the wires on the 8000's.. and always at the connectors.. lol...
Sometime those 8000's put out a little more than they are rated at.. Usually that rated HP is a minium Hp Rating, sometimes a few get out a little higher than others.. There is also some aftermarket boxes that people are installing to increase the HP.. plugs into the wiring harnass at the injection pump.. The highest over rated tractor I have pulled on a dyno was a 4640 that i put a remaned engine in... turned 288HP.. the owner was looking over my sholder.. with a grin from ear to ear... (and he wonders what happened to the other engine.. same pump.. lol..) I had to turn that one down... lol.. I wish I could get this 9520T on a dyno to see some real numbers.. hahaaa.. Catch ya later...

I hear what you're saying about the HP. My personal favorite was the 4430 I dynoed that was cranking 240. Had to turn the screw 3 turns to get it to 145. Also saw a 4440 pull 260 once - scary, especially with no intercooler. I dynoed an early 8400 a while back that would walk all over 300 hp, with no aftermarket box, this seems to be the rule rather than the exception. I guess that's just Deere Power at work, LOL. Great to hear from you.
