I saw a 'G' the other day that seem to have a larger than normal PTO shaft. Did they make them like that and do they make adapters to go to standard 540 for them?

Yes, some of the G's came with a 1 3/4 instead of a 1 3/8 PTO shaft, but they were still 540 RPM. You can buy an adapter that slips over the big and reduces to the regular shaft. I bought my last one from Dear old Shorty Dear who passed away recently and I would sell it if I can find it but havent seen it forever. Ol John T

What was the purpose of the lager PTO shaft. I have seen them too & most of the time they look well worn. Was it a competition deal, only use J/D equitment with a J/D tractor? Also did the produce all three sizes in the same years of production within the Deere line, anyone know? RLA

I'm not sure why they used the larger shaft, suppose due to the larger size tractor and the torque it generated. Don't think they really had asa standards then like now. I have the same thing on my 1938 G. I used a #5 mower on it for a time and had a universal yoke for the larger shaft that fit on the pto shaft for the mower. also have an adaptor. I believe they are still available but not sure where. as far as I know the G was the only one with the larger shaft. I don't know if JD ever used a 1 1/8 inch pto shaft like ford or not.
