In one of my GM magazines there is a article about the 3010 tractor. It compares it to the 730 saying the 730 will eat the 3010's lunch all day. I think it is true that a 730 will outdo a 3010 on tillage jobs, but I would like to know why they are comparing the 4-plow 3010 to the 5-plow 730. I always thought that the 730 should be compared with the 4010 since it was also a 5-plow tractor. In only one of my John Deere books have I found the 730 being compared to the 4010. I have also heard that 730's will out do the 4010.

This was a topic of discussion among my farming relatives in the late sixties. As I remember it, they talked about whether it might be better to buy a used 720-730 or 3010-3020. Perhaps the price was about the same then. The consensus seemed to be that for tillage operations the 2cyl deisels were hard to beat. But for all-around use, the New Generation tractors with more gears and better hydraulics and steering won out. I heard some negative comments about govenor response on the 3010. This was supposedly fixed on the 3020.

I think you have stated it the best so far. I farm with a 820. It is a great tractor for plow and other tillage operations. But manuvering it around in the yard and tight spaces is kinda like driving a boat. Our 5010 even though it is a bigger tractor in every way is much more manuverable.

I don't know about a "730", but I Have seen an "830" w/5 bottom Pull-type, and a 4010 w/5 bottom Mounted plow in the same field, and the "830" would pass the 4010 about every other round..... !!!!! Kinda like comparing a big Steam Loco, to a Diesel Loco....!!! Nothing like Plain Old "Brute Force".....!!

A friend of mine has a 730D and a 3020. He swears that the 3020 will out-pull the 730, but I have my doubts...Hopefully, we can get an ol' fashioned hitch-to-hitch pull-off between them once the weather gets better. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.

A properly ballasted/set-up 530 can outpull a 830 of even greater weight on drawbar force/pull. All depends on hitch height/length,ballast distribution, tires etc. Yet the higher HP 830 could perform more work per hour which is a measure of power. Like comparing torque, lugging ability & HP. Apples, oranges & tomatoes. The 71 or what ever HP 3020 will do more "work" per hour than the 59HP 720/730. Not to say some 730's haven't been treated to straight stacks,Albert's dry aircleaner conversion & a full fuel rack.

Glad to see someone who understands physics here! The rest of this group had me worried. Horsepower is horsepower, the tractor with the higher horsepower will plow more acres in a day. Now if the 730 actually has more horsepower than the 3010, then maybe, otherwise no way the 730 outworks the 3010.

I have a 70D and a 730D and all I would want to pull in our soil is 4-14's (66h plow). It pulls it well but a 5-14 would be a struggle.Maybe in sandy light soil, you could pull 5-14's.
The o'manual sez, 4-14's in any soil and 5-14's in many but I think that is optmistic. But yes they are a "torque monster" 2, 2-1/2 Gal.per hour at full load maybe 800-900 rpm's. Where as my 806"Gas IH will use 5 GAL per hour pulling the same plow BUT admittantly MUCH FASTER and easier at 2200 RPM'S, and I don't have to use the "TA" I ran a comparison between the J.D. and the I.H.
The cost of fuel per acre was simular as the IH was faster so you were in the same field less time (G.P.H.) the DEER's were slower, But they used half of the fuel so the cost per acre for fuel plowing, was close,as you were done quicker with the I.H. I'm sure the 4010 would produce the same results when compared.
I have to admit,I pulled the ol plow TOO fast with the 806. This year I'm going to try the 806
With a F145 5-14's and see how the gal. per acre works out. later, Geo.

When our 730 was the big boy in our shed, Dad once hired a neighbor with an 806 diesel to plow some ground we had just rented, Dad said that for what they were charging to run their Binder, he couldn't buy the gas for the 730. The next spring Dad ordered our first 4020 diesel.HJ

When I worked on a farm years ago we pulled 6 bottoms with 806D in low 3 with tourqe in high did real good in all soils. hills were a problem at times though.

My father's family owned a JD dealership until 1976. When the new model tractors would come in, we would set up a demo day and work them against some older models and even some other colors. When the 4010 first came out we took one to a large farm nearby that had mostly 730's. We had to take that 4010 home, those 730's were flatout out working the 4010 and using less fuel to do it. The later model 4010's were better and would hold their own and in most cases would out work the 730's. The 4010 had it all over the 730 for handling and comfort. But I think you will find a good running 730D is more tractor than a 3020 and comparable to a 4010, depending on how good the two tractors are mechanically.

We had a 730 gas in the early 60s and what I would like to know is, Just what part of the country did that 730 pull that five bottom plow? Never drove a 3010 but did have a 3020 and I wouldn't exactly call that a four plow tractor either.HJ

I kinda think Deere overated some of their tractors on how many plows they can pull. I know an 830 wouldn't be able to pull a 6 bottom plow in our area. Deere must have been testing their tractors in some light soil.

It's a size thing. The 55hp 3010 vs the 59hp 730 didn't turn out to be "fair" because the 730 makes WAY more torque and is about the same weight as a 4010. So, when you figure in the actual weight and displacement and not just the hp rating, the 4010 is more nearly the same size. A 4010 will also eat the 730s' lunch

There were many new purchasers of 3010s back in 1961 who were disappointed in the 3010s' performance.

I grew up on a dairy farm where the 730D was the main tractor. My dad had three different ones over the 20+ years of farming. The book for the 730D claimed 58 hp (if I recall that was PTO). We had hard red clay soil, so pulling 4 bottoms did not happen too often. 3 16s was what we usually pulled. The 730D also had about 1000 lbs of weight bringing it to a total of about 8000 lbs. I have a 3010D that I bought from my grandfather a couple of years ago. The book has it at 59 hp PTO but a dry shipping weight at 6000 lbs. Just on that alone, the 730D will easily out pull the 3010D. I believe the reason why the 730D and the 3010D are compared is because they are suppose to be equivalent HP wise. Quite obviously there are a number of other factors involved that dictate the productivity of any tractor. If I had a choice between the 3010D and the 730D, I would still choose my 3010D. It has a better hydraulic system, foot clutch vs. hand, and works on almost the same amount of fuel. I grew up on hand clutches, so that doesn't bother me and I still do intend to some day acquire a 730D. Both are good tractors.
