Hello again, while I'm on the subject of my A, I was wondering if the connecting rods from a later model A w/the bearing inserts instead of babbet bearings like mine, will fit in my A. The serial # of my tractor is 503802. I was curious because one of my babbets is chipped and I would rather put new bearings in the rods if I could. Thanks to all who can help. Luke

Yes you can but you should have the crank miked. We do this to G's but we always take the crank and have them turn to 010 under

I have had many old engines from cars and tractors with babbit bearings. In my experiance they often have chips and imperfections in the babbit but as long as the bearing wear surface itself is smooth and as long as they maintain oil pressure they will work fine for years. My 1948 A has babbit bearings with a few nicks in them but I still work the tractor pretty hard with no trouble.

Luke, I have a 1945 "A" that someone has put JD-60 rods in and it runs fine.

If you do end up re-babbitting your rods, get a price quote in writing before you send them off. I Didn'y with RAM and it cost me another $50 that I wasn't expecting.

I swapped the babbits in my 1950 A for insert bearings out of a 51 or 52 A and they have worked just fine for me. Just my 2 cents.

You better watch it real close because the radius's on the old rods may not be like the insert type and then your rods will wander so check real close if you go to inserts . There r real good people out there that can redo your old ones like new too.

Tractorboy:

I thought the side play of a rod was determined by the thickness of rod boss vs. the width of the rod journal. I didn't think the radii controlled that at all. I'm pretty sure they don't ever touch.

Have I been wrong on this all along ?

No you are not wrong Frank..just add diametral clearance in addition to thickness of rod boss.

The other post was a good one but I read a post a while back about babbit bearings that said some babbits might be just fine even if there does appear an imperfection in it. I guess that wasn't all that uncommon in the babbits and the suggestion was made that it was still smooth and had ran that way for many years under load so would still hold up. Of course if it was causing some problem on the crank journal, that would not apply.

I believe the rods from 60 JD with inserts are the same diameter as the A crankshaft. Just excange rods, add bearings and you should be in shape.
