I have an oil leak between fan shaft tube and fan drive shaft bearing cover.
the parts book doesn't any kind of seal there.
should I try to put an O ring in the bearing cover so the fan shaft tube will butt aginst it?

Greg: You don't say whether you have power steering, but chances are you do. Try to identify the leaking oil. It's probably PS fluid. There's an oil seal located on the aft shaft opening in the PS pump (mounted on the forward end of the fan shaft), right where the shaft housing bolts up to it.

If that's your problem, you'll need to overhaul the pump. That's no big deal once you get the necessary gaskets, seals, and bushings. Getting the pump off the tractor can be a hassle. Take care not to damage your radiator.

Get yourself an I&T Shop Manual (mine's Manual No. JD-16).

yes I have power steering.
I'm pretty sure the oil leaking is motor oil.
it's black like the motor oil. the power steering oil is still full + clean.
for some reason I can grab the fan shaft tube and move it back and forth 3/8 inch. thanks Greg.

I HAVE A OIL LEAK AND WHEN I TOOK CAR TO THE MECHANIC HE SAYS ITS NOT LEAKING ANYWHERE THAN COMES BACK AND SAYS THAT THE CYLINDER HEAD HAS A LEAK. ITS NOT RUNNING HOT BUT YOU CAN SMELL BURNING OIL AND SOMETIMES SEE SMOKE COMING FROM THE INSIDE WHEN I OPEN THE HOOD. OTHER THAN THAT THE CAR IS RUNNING FINE. MY CAR IS A 1997 DODGE AVENGER 4 CYLINDER 2.0 WITH 100,200 MILES I BROUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW AT THE TIME. i HAVE BEEN TOLD EITHER A NEED A ENGINE OR A REBUILT ONE. A FRIEND OF MINES THAT HAD BEED WORKING ON MY CAN CHANGED THE PCV VALUE AND A HOSE AND THAT DID HELP ALITTLE BECAUSE IT WAS STOPPED UP. BUT I STILL HAVE A OIL LEAKING COMING FROM SOMEWHERE AND ITS NOT LEAKING ON THE GROUND. I HAD IT PUT ON A MACHINE ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO AT THE DEALERSHIP WAS TOLD THE SAME THING BUT I'M STILL DRIVING. THE YELLOW LIGHT DID COME ON A FEW DAYS AGO SAYING CHECK ENGINE TOOK TO AUTOZONE PUT ON MACHINE IT SAID 02 SENSOR WHICH I GUESS ITS SAYING A SENSOR IS GOING BAD ABOUT 5 MINUTES LATER WHEN I DROVE OFF THE LIGHT WENT OUT. WHAT ABOUT THE OIL LIGHT. I AM A FEMALE AND FEEL LIKE I AM BEING TAKING ADVANTAGE OF BECAUSE I AM A WOMAN. I WAS TOLD AT LEAST 3 TIME AT DIFFERENT SHOP THAT I NEED A ENGINE BUT WHEN THE PCV AND HOSE WAS CHANGED KNOW MORE WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT OF TAILPIPE. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD OIL CANGES ON TIME BUT NEVER REALLY CHECK TO SEE IF I NEED ANY OIL BECAUSE I WAS ALWAYS GEETING MY OIL CHANGE ON TINE AND I WAS TOLD THAT YOU I SUPPOSE TO CHECK YOUR OIL ALSO BECAUSE SOMETIMES YOUR OIL CAN GET LOW. HELP
