I am curious to know if you can buy an after market hour gauge for a John Deere 50. Is it even possible to rig an hour gauge to this tractor? I use this tractor for work so an hour gauge would take out a lot of the guess work as far as changing the oil and other lubrication needs. If you can get an hour gauge, where can I find one? I'd appreciate any information on this subject matter. Thank You!!

Tye, you shouldn't have any problem finding an electric hour meter to wire in to the coil powered side that will record hours when ever the ignition is on. Most will work either polarity due to having a plastic case. On a positive ground system just hook the + side to ground & the - side to the coil power terminal.
~Most good auto parts stores or truck supply stores can get you an hour meter, probably even J.C. Whitney has them.

If you want to go through a lot more work and expense, you could look for the used pieces for the governor and tach drive, and buy a Speed-Hour meter from JD. This would give you ground speeds in each gear in addition to tachometer and engine hours measurement.

It was offered as an option on 50's. The Gage itself was AB 4784 R. It would look pretty much like the one installed on the diesels. I sure like having a tach with ground speeds.

Lots of work, but you can probably find most of the parts on a carcass. I think you'd have to buy the Speed-Hour meter itself, since used ones are sort of hard to find in good shape.

Just a thought.

Clooney has a good idea. You could also use an oil pressure switch to power the hour meter. This would keep it from running if you happened to leave the ignition on. I'v used this setup on a lot of older machines that were not equipped with a meter. just run a hot wire through the meter to the switch and run the other side to grd.
