I need to remove the gear that turns the seed plates. There is a cone above the gear that has a slot in it, with a treaded hole in the center. It wpould appear that this unscrews to remove the gear. I don't want to break anything so I need help.
Thank you in advance, Bill

The nut on top of the cone with slot in will just turn out. It is a right hand thread. The best way I find to turn it is put piece of flat bar that will fit in slot, make it long enough so it is out aprox. 1/8 inch on either side. You can then put a pipe wrench on it so it catches the flat bar, thus not making marks on round nut. I have used that system many times over years.

Looks like it just unscrews. Operators Manual is avaiable from your JD dealer for $12.00. Good luck with it.....
