Hey, All! I've got a question about the new 12V P/N regulator I just got for my A. The original regulator has 3 terminals, connected to Battery, Field, and Armature (Gen)...

The new regulator has 4 terminals, first 3 the same, and an extra marked L. What's L? Not only that, but by connecting the new generator terminals properly, I get full charge all the time, no regulation. I shut it off after the battery reached 17 volts.

SO: How do I properly connect the 4-terminal, 12V P/N regulator? Thanks!

JohnDeere Fan, the (L) terminal is hooked to the load wire coming from the light switch (black wire if still original wires). If the old regulator didn't have an (L) terminal both the load (black) & battery (white) were probably hooked to the (BAT) terminal on the old regulator.
~The proper hook-up should be: reg (BAT)terminal to ammeter,,,reg (L)terminal to light switch,,,reg (GEN)terminal to (A) post on generator,,,reg (FLD)terminal to (F) post on generator. (A) post is the bigger of the two on generator.
~If after hooking all the wires per above it still over charges, you have a shorted Field wire, defective regulator or the wrong type of regulator.

Thanks a million! That's awesome! I'll move the Load wire, then! And I'll recheck connections. That's the best advice I've gotten anywhere, and I've been asking in forums for while, now! Have a good one

The mounting bracket turned out to be a problem. The original was mounted to the side of the generator with 2 screws and a band-type mount that held the regulator up off the generator. I ended up chisling the rivets, and removing this mount from the original regulator. Then I drilled holes in the ears where the rivets were, bent the ears on the new one straight down, slid the new ears over the original drilled ones, and bolted them together on each side. Wham. Hooked it up as I was told, started it, and it charged to 13.8 and held steady, even with headlights on. ROCKIN'!
