Found a pretty decent 'original' John Deere 40W over the weekend. It belongs to a hunting club near where I live. They have decided to sell to get a bigger/newer tractor. None of them seem to know a thing about old tractors. Been kept in a shed for years and one of the member's uncles bought it new. They are asking $1,200. Tractor needs restored but is all there and runs nice. Metal is good with no dents. Hood is rusty but nothing serious. Has new back tires and has what looks to me like a 'factory' 3 point. I don't know much about the 40 and wondered if anyone could give me some help. I am pretty sure this is a good buy, but what would a tractor such as this be worth? I have a model 50 and know that the wide front 50's are scarce and the front ends alone are bringing between $800 - $1,000. Is this the same with the 40 or were there many wide front 40's? I would be buying this mainly to replace my 47 Cub for mowing grass and plowing snow.....and of course, having fun! Any help is appreciated!

Guy, the 40-W is a nice little tractor that is ideal for plowing snow & playing with but is a little lacking for heavy PTO work & the PTO is the weak link in the 40 as far as I'm concerned. It will work fine for lawn mowing but isn't the best for heavy brush hog work.
~I usually won't comment on tractor prices or value but will say that I probably would buy that 40 for $1,200 in a heart beat if it is as nice as you say & was offered to me.
~The wide front end on a 40 doesn't add to the value nearly as much as a 50 as there were more sold with wide front ends, but it is still a desirable option.
