I purchased a 39 AN today. My question is, right behind the flywheel there is a square box, with a lever. I am thinking this is an aftermarket road gear box. Who made these, are they common, do they add any value to the tractor? I won't ever use it because the tractor is on steel, I don't want my teeth jarred out.

It may not add more to the value of your tractor but it is definately a part that adds to the tractor if it all works and thats my 2 cents worth

Todd, The box that you are referring to was an aftermarket two speed road gear option that was made by the Behlin Co. In my opinion for what it is worth, I would rather have an older tractor without it. I have seen and worked on them on unstyled A's and B's. Parts are not available for them. The top and bottom transmission shaft is a Behlin part and to convert it back you will need both of the originals transmission shafts to do so. The old tractor will really click down the road in high gear. To use this option you place the main shift lever in neutral and then shift the add on lever into gear. Once shifted in you can split shift it with the original transmission high low lever, giving you two speeds. Do not shift the main shift lever in when using this add on option as you will have the tractor in two gears at once and one of them will pay the price if the clutch is engaged. Be careful starting the engine if your tractor is still a hand start as you will leave the skin off your knuckles on the Behlin transmission cover. There should be a spacer behind the fly wheel spacing the flywheel out to give your finger a little more room but it still will bit you if you are not careful. Good Luck Dave W.
