I have a 51 A set up for pulling, occasionally the starter switch arcs together, have tried all the easy stuff including all new cables and wires and battery. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
TJ

If, after following Mark's (good) suggestions, you still have problems, try installing a larger-amp battery, larger cables, etc. If the starter motor "drags" when the engine's coming up on compression, you're pulling too much current with your present set-up.

Unlike 4 or 6 cylinder engines, these old two-poppers bring fully half the engine up on compression at one time--a big load for the starting system.

I just had to rebuild the starter on my 52 A last month. I found that who ever rebuilt it the last time had put 2 of the 4 brush holders in backwards. This cuased a side load on the brush not the needed end load. the brushes then cocked in there holder just enough to not make contact with the armature com ring, thus arcing, this caused the start contact to fry. If you pull your brushes out , they should be shiney where they touch the com ring, also clean the com ring while you have it all apart. If you need more help just holler!
