I acidentaly stripped the drain plug on my 36 B so i have to dink around with it to get it in and it cant be more than finger tight. I was wondering how to fix this right now i put water in it as needed because the cooling system isnt the best and it leaks in a few places and i dont want any animals lickin up antifreeze.

Go to your local hardware store and buy a short 3/4 inch pipe nipple and a 3/4 inch cap. Also buy some teflon tape. Wrap the tape around the nipple and thread it into the head. It will thread in because the thread is tapered. Then screw the cap on the nipple. You may need to tap the hole first.

Any good parts store will have oversize plugs.

Andy, When I bought my 41 "B" 6 yrs ago it had a rubber expansion plug instead of the regular plug.
After restoring the tractor last year I decided to continue to use that plug. It has a wing nut to expand it to fit and is stainless so it doesent rust and makes it a lot easier to drain the coolant. I'll e- mail you a picture of it if you would like.

I have had 2 A john Deers and a H JD that the plug was stripped. I have had good luck just retapping the head. In the A's I used a pipe thread tap and I thank it was a 3/4inch just be careful and don't go too far up in the head. I can't remember what size I used in the H. Good luck John.

You should be able to re-tap the hole with a pipe tap. It will be oversize...many hardware stores have pipe threading equipment and can make a nipple with oversize threads on one end to fit. The die in the threading machine is adjustable from 1/2 inch and up and can be adjusted anywhere in between. Then just use a pipe cap on the nipple. It's worked for me several times.

does anyone make a plug like the origional long hex head drain plug? i've got one on my 41,b. it's just like the short hex head oil drain plug, only the head seems like it's three times as long. when you take the plug out, you'd better have a six gallon or bigger pail ready cause the system will completely drain in about 15 to 20 seconds. deere ingineers had a good design when they came up with that plug
