Hi every one, I have a 1951 Jd M. I was driving it today for about 30 min and it was blowing a ton of white smoke out of the breather for the valve cover. I know it's going to have a little smoke but I'm talkin LOTS. It always does this for the first 15-20 min or until the tractor is warmed up. Any tips would be helpfull.
Thanks!

The prob I have with the bad rings theory is that he said it stopped after about 20 min of running therefore if the rings were shot which may be the case it would still have blowby after it gets hot so I stay by my theory which is a leak internally that burns off when it gets hot so watch the water level and let us know what you find .

If your getting smoke out the breather ,that is blow-by ,which is a sign of worn or stuck piston rings.Do a compression test and see what you end up with .The spec. I have is 110psi for a gas eng.If it is a lot lower, pump a little oil into each plug hole, let it a few seconds (so it can seep around the rings some) then retest. If the compression reads considerably higher ,its a pretty good indication you have ring problems.Bob,from Triple G Service.

Is the water level staying to the top or is it going down some, u may have an internal leak that is slow and is burning off after it runs and the white smoke is the moisture burning off. u better check it out before it gets worser .

TractorBoy I have noticed a slight drop in antifreeze over the past month. Theres no water in the oil. Does this mean a bad head gasket or a crack somewere? This tractor is stored in a canopy were theres a moisture forming on the tractors unless I leave the tarps open. Would that have any to do with this?

Is it smoke or vapor? could be fron condensation. How does it run? Possibly valves aren't seating properly. Bad valve seals or loose valve stem to guide probems usually caus smoke out the exhaust when you first start.

It runs pretty decent. The breather cap never gets condensation in it.

On the top of the cylinder head is a water manifold going upward to the upper radiator hose. If the gasket for this manifold seeps, the moisture on the outside of the engine may appear to be white smoke as it boils away.
