I have my first reduction gear cover off took the dust shield cover off to clean, in the three rear holes are 1/4 bolts. The front 4 are studs with nuts and lock washers. The top of the studs have holes in them like for wire or kotter pins but they are wore down 1/2 through the hole. The bolt heads have not been touched. I can not see any wear on the back side of the clutch. Can some one out there tell what may have caused the wear,or why some are bolts and some are studs? My books don't show the bolts at all.THANKS B D

Clooney, You are right the bolts are 5/16 because it took a 1/2 wrench to get them out, and they do have holes in the heads. They were full of dirt. I can see that two of the three pulley castings have rubbed slightly. Would it be safe to heat the casting around the studs to get them out? There is room to cut 1/8 off and still have a full thread and leave them in. The A is 1940. Thank you for your input. B D

BottomD, I think I would try to double nut the studs & try to pull them. If they don't come out easily then just trim shorter & use nuts on them with loc-Tite.
~Originally Deere used little lead washer under the lower bolt heads but if the bolts are put in with sealer or Loc-Tite & small thin regular washers you won't have any seepage problems.

BottomD, you didn't say what year "A" you are working on but I assume it is a later model because it has (7) dust shield bolts instead of 4 rivets.
~I don't know what you have there but it sounds like someone has been there before. ~Look closely at the holes in the 1st reduction cover for the 1/4" bolts & see if they are actually 5/16" bolts that were broken off & re-drilled in the center then re-tapped for 1/4". If I remember correctly that dust shield is supposed to be held on by (7) 5/16" bolts with cross drilled heads so safety wire can be installed through the bolt heads.
~With the wear on those studs it sounds like either your clutch pulley or at least a past clutch pulley has been hitting the ends of those studs or the studs were ground off for pulley clearance.
~If by chance you have an early tractor then maybe someone has drilled the 1st reduction cover for (7) attachments like the later tractors & used different sized attaching bolts/studs for different locations.
~In any case you should use bolts in all locations to be sure the pulley dog tabs clear the heads & if Loc-Tite is used on the (clean) bolts you probably don't need the safety wire.
