If you left the drain plug out of the head, that is a perfect size for a mouse to get into and make a nest. That is a common problem.

William, John T is probably correct in the diagnosis of no circulation. You mentioned antifreeze in your response to his post. It makes one wonder if you properly premixed the replacement antifreeze solution. If one simply pours in unmixed antifreeze and water, the antifreeze, being heavier, will stay at the bottom and will effectively block any thermo-syphon action of coolant circulation. The result is a quick heat-up.

Had a similar problem with my '41 B - added some Bars Leaks without having the cooling system warmed up. Had to drain it and start all over.

(I hope this isn't a double post)

Look for a mouse nest in the top tank.

William, it sounds like you may have a coolant circulation problem and I have also seen the blocks water passages so clogged up they cant circulate and cool. I wouild start with a real good total flush and see if it helps, but I have seen the heads/blocks so full of crud a flush wont clear them out. Ol John T Nordhoff

It shouldn't have anything to do with the radiator cap. The other guys are right. I am sure it is one of the things mentioned. Also, if your temp gauge says 230, there is something wrong with it. The old bugger can't get that hot without some boiling going on which would naturally cool it down. Unless you have the wrong radiator (pressurized) which was used a short while during the war years.
