After much time checking the wiring and starter and generator I can not keep the generator polarized on my tractor. It seems everytime I engage the starter it zero's out the voltage from the generator and opens the contacts at the regulator. Any suggestions as to cause of this problem

park it in a nice barn with lotsa hay around and the wiring harness will short out and the thing will burn up and if the barn is big enough there wont be anything left of that piece of crap JD to fix---AGAIN!!!!

After owning most other types of tractors I had rather have to pull a John Deere off to use it than have to be disgraced riding on some off brand junk.

Craig, Something you might check is: Some 24 volt alternators were shipped with a short bare ground wire that went from the regulator frame around rubber mounting bushing and grounded to the mounting bracket. This wire is NOT for a John Deere application and should not be used if yours has this wire remove it and repolarize and see if it will work . If it had it on and it won't work after removing it the regulator is most likely damaged. Just a thought as this is one I have seen on some regulators, even from John Deere as they by parts by bid and some are packaged for NON John Deere applications. Some auto parts store regulators will have a metal grounding tin strap that is riveted to the frame of the regulator and lays over top of the two rubber mounting bushings which will also ground the body of the voltage regulator to the frame of the tractor, this too will not work. If you have this one take it back as it is not correct for your application. Good Luck, Dave W.

Craig, Are you sure the generator is working properly??? The Voltage Regulator Cut out portion is supposed to disconnect the Generator from the battery when its not putting out any voltage, such as when you shut the tractor off, so the battery doesnt reverse discharge through the armature windings to ground. Those contacts are supposed to make up when the Generator puts out sufficient voltage to charge the battery, but if it never reaches that, they never close. You may try and connect the field out of the generator to ground to see if that makes her charge or momentarily short the Bat and Arm (on the VR) when running to see if she gets charge to the battery then, either of which, could mean a faulty regulator. Hey John.... I might be wrong but I think these generators are a bit out of the ordinary. I think if you want to "ground" the field terminal of these critters, isn't the ground you're looking for actually the GRD terminal on the regulator? I believe the GRD term of the regulator is one end of the battery string while the BAT terminal is the other end of the string and the frames (tractor or generator) electrically have nothing to do with the charging system circuitry.

Agree in that it sounds like there's either a wiring problem or a generator problem otherwise the points of the cutout relay would be open whenever the tractor is not running anyway. I believe all the windings of these 24 volt generators are completely isolated from the frame of the machine.

If all three wires are removed from the generator, an Ohm meter should show opens (or very high like Meg Ohm resistances) between the generator shell and each of the three wire terminals. If the resistance is low between the shell & any terminal, there is a fault in the generator and that is a problem that may well cause what he's describing. I think such a fault usually drains only one of the two batteries but if the cutout relay stays closed, then they'll both get drained.

Later.

Al, you are right, the arm and field on those are both isolated from case ground and the field (grounds) or completes the circuit, off the regulator I believe. The gen and starter are both 2 wire devices at 24 volts across both batteries in series. John T

I have installed a new requlator, new switch and verified the wiring. If I polarize while running it stays and output seems to be OK. But I am aware that even a new regulator may be bad.

Which terminals are being connected & is the engine running while the polarizing is being done? Is this generator equipped with two main 24 power terminals & one "field" post? Does this regulator have seven wires connected to four terminals?
