I am looking to buy a plow for my JD 40s but am not sure what size plow the tractor can
handle. The JD manual says a 2 bottom plow but doesnt tell whether a 12inch, 14inch or
16 inch plow. Anyone with info please let me know. Thank you.

The model 412 a 2X14 plow was sold mostly for the model 40 tractor. I see them for sale quite often 200-300 dollars.

I pull an old model 5B 2-12" with my 40U. Around here we have some pretty heavy soil and I think it would load my tractor too much to pull anything larger. Good luck finding yourself a plow.

I have the original disc breakers that came with mine. I think they cut about 10-12 inches. I believe the 40 would be happier with 12 inch plows in most soils, but with weight in the tires could handle more.

It depends on the soil type if you're going to use it to plow with, but here are the options given in a sales brochure from July 1954:

No. 411 One-Bottom Plow is available with 14- or 16-inch bottom for "40" Standard Tractor and with 14-, 16-, or 18-inch bottom for the "40" Tricycle tractor.

No. 412 Two-Bottom Plow is available with 10-, 12, or 14-inch bottoms for either tractor.

I'm sure someone on here has had personal experience and can give you more good thoughts.
