I bought a 36 B that has a bad head and block. I also have a 39 B with a good engine. My question is it possible to change over the block, head, pistons, water pipe, etc from the 39 to the 36? I want to be able to use the unstyled radiator. Thanks for any help.

Rod, The block on a 39 "B" has a different bolt pattern where it bolts up to the engine crankcase, so to answer your question NO the block will not fit your 36 case and the head from a 39 will not fit the old 36 block either due to the water hole passages are shaped different (requires a different head gasket). Here is an option though that will work and I take that you are not that concerned with originality anyway. The frame, front end, radiator, governor and fan shaft assembly, fuel tank and hood from your 36 will fit and bolt to your 39 tractor without any modification other than the upper water pipe. To make a long story short, what you would end up with is a short frame unstyled 39 "B". Keep the parts and you could always transfer them back someday if you desired. It will work as I have built many pullers doing this. Good Luck, Have fun. Dave W.

Check your casting numbers but I heard that the 39 carried the unstyled motor in it. I bet you could change them.

Jerry, Your comment is true when applied to an unstyled "A" and a 1939 "A" but not true when refering to The model "B". Sorry but the "B" engine changed in 39 as where the "A" changed in 1940. Dave W.

WTW, Thanks for straightening me out on that. I have a 39B I am using some parts from and was wondering what I am going to do with some of it. I was afraid that none of the engine parts would work for my 43B but I had better check again.

Jerry, More information concerning your comment. The 39 and 40 "B" is a series of its own and in 41 the model "B" changed engines again including block, head, crank, pistons and rods. To sum up what I am saying, there is four different engine series when talking about the model "B" row crop tractor. First series being 1935-1938, Second 1939-1940, Third 1941-1946 and fourth 1947-1952. The first two series, rods and hand crank flywheel are the same. The last two engine series, heads and connecting rods will interchange. In the run of the model "B" there is three different bore sizes and two different crank strokes. All series used a different crank and block even though some bore and stroke dimensions didn't change from one to another. If you want to mix parts to build pullers or just tinker there is allot of things that can be switched around amongst all the series. I tell people when they ask what year my pulling tractors are that I need to know what part of it are they want to talk about as it is like Johnny Cash's Cadillac. Well it its a 35.36 37,38, 39 40,41 and on goes the song. Have Fun, Dave W.
