we have a JD 4400 combine, diesel, and i was combining with it this summer and all the sudden it lost power and stalled out. It does it randomly. What is causing it to do this? My guess wan the injector pump because the electric fuel pump is fine.

Hey John,

I had the same trouble with a 4400 w/329 diesel that I had just purchased this September and found it to be the wire that operates the electric shut-off solenoid. It was occasionally touching the exhaust manifold, causing it to hesitate and even quit. Re-routing the wire cured it. If it looks okay, check the usual suspects such as fuel strainer above the float bowl, filter ,etc. Someone also told me once that there is another strainer INSIDE the fuel tank, so you may want to investigate this as well.

It could be the injection pump, but check the fuel tank first, afterall its free to clean the tank. i found our combine grew all kinds of nasty stuff in the fuel tank while it was sitting. The nasty stuff would suck up against the fuel outlet causing a fuel starvation, thus killing the engine.

Maybe it is the pump, but try the free stuff first.

I have the same problem with my 4400 about once a year. I clean the fine screen in the sediment bowl and then it works fine again. This is my 25th year with my 4400 and it is good for many more years.

If it has the roosa master rotary pump then the elasticast ring has failed that holds the governor weights together. The return line clogs which does not let fuel enter the pump no longer. It will cause it to die and then it will still start back up and run for a little bit and then die again. Check to see if the return is clogged. If not then check for fuel tank restrictions, fuel filters, etc.

It has a Roosa Master pump on it, and i should have mentioned this but the pump is putting up fuel, and we have cleaned out the sediment bowl.
