All good suggestions mentioned. I would go after the ignition points first though. Had this problem on my 50 show up out of nowhere and the points were bad, I put in an electronic ignition and now it runs beautifully.

Royboy, you mentioned it "was running ok" is it still running ok with just the backfire in the exhaust or does it also run bad now?
~If it still runs ok with just the exhaust backfire, suspect an air leak into the exhaust pipe at the manifold to pipe joint. Any air leaked/sucked into the exhaust pipe will allow firing in the exhaust/muffler at low loads & pop like crazy.
~If there is a miss, poor running, or popping under heavy load suspect ignition, carburetion or burnt/sticking valves. ~If it is missing while backfiring it could be due to any of the things mentioned in the posts below & it probably would be a good idea to start with the basics like a compression test (hot throttle open), new plugs, new points/condenser, new solid core ignition wires, clean & check the distributor cap, then if that doesn't clear up your problem you will have to re-check the carb & other causes like ignition coil, cam wear, distributor cam wear, distributor bushings etc.
~As an initial check it wouldn't hurt to set the distributor point gap a little wider & isolate the ignition wires from each other to see if that will help.

May also be a sticky exhaust valve. Sometimes when they sit a while, the damp air gets the carbon around the valve stem wet enough to make it stick a little. Let it run long enough to get warm and drive ti around for a while. Sometimes this works. May have to remove the tappet cover and check valves with a small hammer. Tap them and see if they slam shut or stick.

One thing almost never mentioned about Mag- equiped 2-cylinders is that Moisture in the mag is a common problem.... Even a moisture content that you can't even see will cause hard starting, and the LOUDEST explosions out the exhaust you ever heard...!!!! Sometimes just letting the Sun shine on the removed mag cap for 5 minutes is enough ..... My $.02 worth..

royboy, check the timing and also check the carb gasket on the intake, if you are getting air leak between the carb and intake you can get backfire throught the carb or the exhust.
