Ignition seems to be working. The carb is new. The exhaust pipe seems to heat red hot, although the engine seems cool (I removed the thermostat). It runs for 5-10 minutes, then backfires and dies. Is the number one cylinder in the front, and which connection on the distributer cap is it? Does any one suspect valve problems or have valve specs, gap settings, suggested spark plug etc.? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

P. rupp, it wouldn't hurt to have a little more information on your problem. Has it always run ok then just started this problem or has it always run like this since you have owned it?
~The "red hot" exhaust pipe makes it sound like you are running lean or the ignition timing is running late.
~Pull the plug (or open the pet cock) on the bottom of the carb & see if you have a steady stream of fuel for at least 30 seconds, if not you have probably found your problem & find out why you don't have fuel flow for 30 seconds+.
~If all ok with the fuel flow check the point gap first (.020"-.022") then make sure the timing is correct (I don't have a manual handy for the timing but think it should fire #1 cylinder when the SPARK stamped on the flywheel lines up in the center of the timing hole at fast idle). You can use a regular timing light if you power it from a 12 volt source like a different vehicle or battery charger & hook it to #1 cylinder then point it into the timing hole.
~I don't have a manual handy to give you the valve lash on the 420 but the 40 is .012" so make sure you have at least that (maybe someone with a manual will look it up & post it) . ~The front cylinder is #1 & on the 40 the front wire goes to the front post on the cap & I believe they should be the same on the 420.
~A few things to look for are worn distributor bushings, sometimes they will keep the points from opening correctly as the engine gets hot (opening the point gap a little will sometimes help if that is the problem). A bad ignition coil will sometimes fail only when hot. The wrong coil polarity (the same little terminal on the coil (- or +) should go to the distributor as the battery ground (e.g.. positive battery ground = positive terminal on the coil to the distributor)
