2640 Hydraulic failure

I have an interesting problem with the hydraulic system on my 2640; all hydraulics completely fail after about 5 minutes of operation. This failure includes the 3 point, power steering, reverser, loader (146) and brakes. If I shut down the engine and wait 30 seconds or more, full hydraulics are restored. The longer it is shut down the longer all functions work, that is, up to about 5 minutes. The tractor was purchase last Sept. and was used extensively with no problems. It was shedded last November until our first snow storm this week when I needed it the most. The cold temperature we are now having may be a contributing factor. The JD dealer (claims, and I'm assuming its true) changed the filter and oil prior to resale. The numbers on the hydraulic pump serial plate are ROPVEA1046250 and RP1040JOE0100 with Aug 91 as the date. The tracter is a 1979 model and starts and runs well. If anyone has encountered this problem any advice on where I can start would be greatly appreciated. I have the JD Technical Manual but a "yep, the same thing happened to me and this is what fixed it ..." would sure help. I'd hate to have to buy the test gauges and fittings if I don't have to.

Well guys, it looks like Gord may have the answer to my hydraulic problem. Following Gord's instructions I went right to the screen's location. I could not believe how plugged this inlet screen was; in fact, it was so plugged with many years of buildup I could hardly pull it out through the opening. I am surprised that the hydraulics worked at all even in warm weather. Also, there did not appear to be any new material on the nylon screen and I did not detect any holes which would allow passage of crud into the system. My local Deere dealer will have one by tomorrow and I should have the new screen, filter and oil in the tranny by Wednesday. When warm weather arrives I think I'll drain and somehow attempt to flush the tranny out. Thanks to all of you for your generous contributions.

Mike I had a simlar problem and found out that setting outside rain water worked its way into trans through gearshifts, didn't know until winter when hyds only worked for a short time. Ice plugged filter. I had a hard time flushing all the moisture out of tractor and loader. Hope this helps, good luck Doug

There's a hydraulic line inside the tranny that
was a problem on some of the early 2640 tractors.
The line was only around $26.00,but you had to
spit it to fix it.

Had a similar problem, when you check your new filter see if there is a silverish residue in the bottom of filter housing. If there is,post a followup cause, the next part could be nasty.Hope there isn't John.

I had a 2640 and had several hydraulic problems but not like you discribe. If it were my tractor, I would pull the filter and see if there is any metal or pieces of O ring in it. The dealer may have changed out the filter but the problem may have started more recently. Everything runs off the main hydraulic pump in front of the engine. I seems like I rebuilt that a couple times in 500 hrs.

The problem with your tractor is probably material plugging the inlet screen in the bottom of the transmission. On the RH side of the transmission just above the filter bowl and toward the rear of the tractor you will find a round plug with a 1/2" square drive recess in it. Drain the trans oil and remove the plug and pull the screen out. It is a porous tube and just slides horizontally into the trans. There is a chance that brake material or hyd cylinder packing material is plugging the screen. When you shut off the tractor the material will fall away from the screen and hydraulics will return. Let me know how you make out.
