I have a 620 which sat in the barn for about 4 or 5 years. When we got it out the gas in the tank was obviously no good. The entire tank was filled with rust and dirt. Well, I finally have got the tank cleaned out but I'm afraid some dirt got into the carb. It runs its best when the choke is half way out and the tractor is not moving. When the tractor moves for a while, it will start missing and then shut off. I can't begin to push the choke in or it starts running rough. I'm almost positive there is dirt in the carb and I have already ordered a carb rebuild kit from john deere. My question, i guess, would be how should i go about tearing it apart, what should i look for, and so on. ANy help will be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

The duplex on your 620 is probably suffering from a plugged idle circuit, causing the need to run choke all the time. While it's apart, make absolutely certain that you clean those idle passages extremely well. Good soak in carb cleaner, compressed air w/ needle tip, set of torch tip cleaners & can of brakleen should get the job done. Make certain that you can get fluid from one side of the passage to an exit location, because if you can't, it isn't clean. Pay attention to how it comes apart & you'll be OK - If you have to remove the steel balls, you'll have to ask someone else, as I've never happened across one that needed that treatment. Brakleen works great for this job, as it evaporates quickly & doesn't create a slimy mess like spray carb cleaner can. Be sure to wear gloves & eye protection, as this will dry both your skin and eyeballs if it gets to the wrong places :)

if you're unsure of the approach, I'd suggest sending it to Robert's carburator service.

Hi Dan, before you tear into the carb, see if you have an automatic shutoff at the tank outlet. If so, I would suggest a complete disassembly of it and a good cleaning. I have three tractors with those, and had to clean everyone after I got them. While your there, I'd recommend replacing the diaphrams in the shutoff. There very inexpensive, but can cause you big problems if they get a hole in them. If it doesn't correct the problem, your just out a little time, and you know the shutoff is good to go. Good luck to you, Don
